D&D 5E New DMG Excerpt: It's A Trap!

I got the 2nd page.

Did no one seriously check the web urls for the images? All I had to do was add "_large" to the right spot of the image on the original source, entertainer as was mentioned above, and I got the full size image.

Interesting that they've moved away from the "trap as an encounter element with a CR etc." and are treating it more as a narrative element. I like it better that way, actually, as in practice the "trap with a CR" model always seemed to lead to anemic traps that were more annoying than actually threatening.

I'm curious as to what they have to say about XP awards and mixing traps with other elements. I think there's room for both the "deadly trap as a whole encounter on its own" type and the "trap is a spike pit the bugbears will try to shove you into" type, but I almost see them as two different things rather than two types of the same thing.

I find it interesting that this seems to be one place where they moved away from Bounded Accuracy's "Something is always the same whether you are 1st or 20th level. Two characters of vastly different levels would get vastly different damage from the same trap.

Well, that's... disappointing. No longer is a Rogue even good for getting past traps, because now it requires a completely different skill - keying from a completely different ability score - to disable magic traps. If you want to be able to find and remove all traps reliably, you need Wisdom and Dexterity and Intelligence andPerception and Arcana and proficiency with Thieves' Tools. And you can only start with expertise on two of those!

Nah, because it's descriptive rather than prescriptive. The trap will do 4d10 damage to anyone, but it's deadly against a low-level character or a minor setback to a high-level character.

The chart's just giving you advice on how to design the traps if you want to tailor them to the party.

I can buy that reading. Seeing the next few pages should make it pretty clear.
