D&D 5E What are the Roles now?

Because it does fit.
If a character isn't doing one of the combat roles in the 4th Ed PHB, he or she probably doesn't help in combat.

Um...even if that's the case (which I disagree because a PC can be more than just one role, depending on the situation and what the player wants to do), so what? THere are more things to D&D than just combat.

But the 4e books says he should be a defender. Which is what we're (or at least I) am getting at. 4e shoehorned classes into a particular role by telling you what role each class is. 5e isn't like that at all.

Also, he's not a striker at all. he doesn't do any more damage than any other standard fighter.

I never mentioned the word class.
I never said one can't have multiple roles.

I said the 4th roles match 5th characters.
I can clarify that this only counts for combat and combatants.

So what are you matching the roles to... earlier you said characters... so are you saying for any character created, who is participating in combat... you can match it to a 4e role?

Eh, you're missing the possibility that a class doesn't match to any one particular 4e role...

Never said the word class.
But I would like to see a 5e D&D PC combatant who doesn't fit in a 4e role.

But that role will change from battle to battle. Or at least it's entirely possible. In one encounter, a character can act ilke a defender. In another, maybe he or she acts like a striker. And in another a leader. It really all depends on the scenario.

One role has apparently changed significantly:

That doesn't conflict with what I said.

You can swap roles, switch roles, do 2 roles, 3, all 4, fry, mash them, mix them, match them, do a role hardcore, be a purist, etc.

But if you're in a combat and participating, youre doing a 4e role in 5e.
