When the rules for healing potions say "drinking or administering a potion takes an action," they are saying that yes, if you are at 0 hp someone can come pour a potion down your gob and you get healed by it.

The unconscious player obviously cannot, but another person can move over to him and use their action to administer a healing potion, as long as they were able to drink one themselves (free hand and the potion isn't buried in the backpack).

Can an unconscious PC with 0 hp forced to drink down a potion of healing before he/she fails on 3 death save?
Are you the GM? Then the answer is yes.

You might want to look into the nature of a "potion of healing" though - if it's just water with a Cure spell in it, then there's no need to drink it. Just douse the victim. If it's a stew of slightly greasy solar atoms, then yes, the victim should probably be conscious or he'll possibly choke.

"How did you die?" "I choked on a healing potion."

For simplicity sake I (DM) do allow administration of healing potion to a hp0 PC, by drinking that is.
Of cos i guess there would always be argument on possibly choking the poor guy/gal (which is why I want to know how other DMs rule this), but I still need them to save the world, so yah, no complications when drinking @ hp0.

You have given me ideas that healing potions do not always need be drunk. Healing salves, smelling pungent waking fumes or sprinkling reviving powder may work too. Perhaps added side effects like lethargy giving disadvantage to rolls until after a long rest etc.
