I'll take "stuff I only know because my friends told it to me to try and convince me to watch Adventure Time" for 1 XP, Alex.

Well I was hoping it would take more than one post, still the only Lich I'm familiar with and I just can't picture a lich otherwise.

I just have to say that to me, Strahd is not and never will be "The Vampire." That award will always and forever go to Matthew Maule, a.k.a. Mr. Strangeways, a.k.a. Thorn, a.k.a. Vlad Drakulya. (And Sherlock Holmes' cousin.)

And the things that make him iconic have nothing to do with his freaky vampire powers and everything to do with his personality: old-world hospitality and charm, a dedication to lifelong learning, decisive action and a willingness to take responsibility, and a complete disregard for fear even against things (crocodile gods and ancient enchantresses) which have him completely outclassed.

Having no clue who any of the names listed are EXCEPT the first, Acererak is the only, and obvious, true "D&D" choice.

Keraptis being the only possible, though never explicitly stated as a "lich" (though I always imagined so), runner up.

I don't know who you are talking about. But I don't think he is a D&D vampire, so he does not count for this.

Acererak is not a lich however he is a Demilich and has only been seen as a Demilich. Keraptis is not a lich ether just an ancient human found a way to live a long time.

Szass Tam wins because he is the only iconic named so far that is a straight up lich. Vecna the only one who I say rivals him is a god and is known to everyone as a god not a lich.

You know, I don't think there is one particular D&D lich that is as iconic as Strahd is for D&D vampires. At least, if you're counting "iconic" as having a high degree of name recognition.

Vecna would fit the bill, if you were to count him as a lich. However, as has been pointed out, he's more closely associated with godhood.

That would leave Acererak as the only other serious contender, although he arguably has considerably less name recognition than our boy Vecna. But - as already mentioned - he's a demilich. So, no go.

Szass Tam wins the prize as possibly the only real lich mentioned so far, but being a big in Thay doesn't equal iconic in D&D.

Vecna, if gods are allowed. Larloch, if not. He is the most powerful Faerunian.

For general "all D&D" poster child lich, I'd say Vecna still.

Not knowing a single one of these characters sadly, I give my vote to Ron Pearlman. Whoever gets the reference gets XP.

FWIW, that Lich is by far the spookiest. Swizzlestick Tammy is all "I need to maintain diplomatic relations with the Moonsea and deal with the fact that not EVERYONE in my nation is a slave to my immortal will." Vecna's all "Everybody, I'm the Lichiest, you should worship me, but be sneaky!" Acerarak just sits around and waits for idiots to kill. But the Lich is aggressively seeking the end of all things, and only an active hero can stop him.
