That's great and all. I'm a big fan of continuity gags, which are all over the place in 5E.

That doesn't make him popular or well-known, though. He's basically an in-joke for anyone who might recognize him. And, like any other in-joke, it's entirely meaningless to anyone who doesn't.

If this was about just being popular & well known, Xykon would have won, because he's trendy (Vecna, like most on this list, hasn't done squat in quite a while now). That's not what these are about (as noted by the hate most popular characters normally receive). Oh, and I find it hilarious that you consider having a small write up in the 3E DMG (which he was in only because they made Greyhawk the standard campaign setting) to be more important than being on the cover of the 5E DMG.

It is worth noting, however, that in both cases it was the lich's head that became famous for killing PCs.

There's a case to be made that, in both cases, it was player decisions that became famous for killing PCs.

I think becoming a god is a bit more of a win than becoming an immobile head. Just sayin.

Vecna isn't a god in any book that I'm aware of*. If he were, he would presumably have reclaimed his eye and his hand.

* Stuff invented by later writers at a different company doesn't count.

Neither has Xykon. What has he done in the last thirteen years? Gotten killed by low-level adventurers and taken over a city. Not much to show for thirteen years' of work.

If it was only in the 3E DMG, then you might be right. But he's in the 3E PHB, which is roughly five times more widespread. Only the DM ever looks at the DMG.
