Incidentally, the maximum strength cap is incorrect anyway: Becca Swanson can bench press in excess of 480lbs, which places her above 18/00 strength. And while she is obviously an exception individual, so too are PCs.

Aaaah, steroids.

The modern equivalent of magic/divine intervention - which can push stat maximums above the quoted limits.

Yes, I am being slightly facetious. In my opinion it's a silly argument. I doubt anyone ever really got offended by race/gender limits in a fantasy game, and I doubt it ever put people off playing it. The OP was about running 5E like 1E, and those limits are there in the early pages of the PHB, so it would make it 'like 1E' to include them.

(and for the record, I'd happily play in a female dominated game world where male characters could not get an education, or where the male of the species is smaller/weaker than the female because of genetic differences or whatever! I frequently use fantasy sexism/racism in my storylines. as they add flavour to a world - my players have visited cities where all Elves are slaves, we've had NPCs refer to female PCs as 'the domestics' and refuse to speak directly to them, we've had taverns where no PCs under 5' can get an ale... and so on! It's all part of the fun of the game)

I doubt it had a significant effect on the player base, but I also doubt that there was nobody who was put off by them.

5e will never be exactly like 1st Ed (for obvious reasons). That being the case, I'm not sure why anyone would prioritise this particular little-used rule for use.

As an FYI, I like the ideas behind some of your rules, and if you develop them further, I hope that you'll share them. My biggest 1e/5e difference, however, can't be easily codified; it's the difference in magic. Way, way more in 5e.

Yeah notice I cut back the list of allowed classes. I'm not after an exact duplication of AD&D rules.

You could always see what a 1e type game would look like if made for 5e rules. I wrote a document for Old School play which basically transferred a lot of the 1e type ideas to 5e.

It's on DM's guild under 5e Old School.

It adds a lot of the rules from older editions as options. Multi-classing was a little different (a meld of 1e and 2e, with more 1e on intial ranges, and more 2e on breaking those ranges) if one wants to take a look.

It also had other stuff in regards to class and race limitations if one wanted to use those options.
