Incidentally, the maximum strength cap is incorrect anyway: Becca Swanson can bench press in excess of 480lbs, which places her above 18/00 strength. And while she is obviously an exception individual, so too are PCs.
In my opinion it's a silly argument. I doubt anyone ever really got offended by race/gender limits in a fantasy game, and I doubt it ever put people off playing it.
The OP was about running 5E like 1E, and those limits are there in the early pages of the PHB, so it would make it 'like 1E' to include them.
And also because I'm against the rule. And, yes, I do think that at least some people defend it out of sexist reasons. I'm not making that accusation against you or @TheCosmicKid, because I of course don't and can't know...
As an FYI, I like the ideas behind some of your rules, and if you develop them further, I hope that you'll share them. My biggest 1e/5e difference, however, can't be easily codified; it's the difference in magic. Way, way more in 5e.
Given the 1E bard was part fighter, might the valor bard actually be a better fit?I'd cut the valor bard as well. Bards were pretty non-existent in 1e, given the multiclass requirements. And they certainly weren't primary spellcasters.
