D&D 5E Do you care about setting "canon"?

Do any of these things you listed actually replace something that was in previous editions of D&D... or are they just additions?
I'm sorry, I thought we were complaining about things we "bought" that we will never use and are wasted word count.

No... we are talking about changing/replacing old canon with new canon...
Which is effectively the same result. You're paying for something you don't want. Replace "tiefling origin" with "Tarrasque" and you see how silly that statement seems.

The devil is in the details... At an even more general and simplistic level we are talking about "stuff in books".Yet I'd argue, like your statement above, it fails to capture the specifics (and thus the point) of the conversation which I think are necessary if you are trying to contribute to the discussion meaningfully.

I get the point quite well. My point is if you want to argue the merits of changes to Canon, that "I don't want things in my books I won't use." Is a weak place to start. They didn't delete the old books, nor is wotc going to force your tiefling to look like the phb.

That wasn't my argument...

There is a difference between having Eladrin in the PHB and making all Gold Elves into Eladrin.

One of those is a really stupid idea and the other allows you to play an Eladrin character.

When has D&D ever told anyone, that if they want to play a "gold elf", they *must* play an eladrin?

I'm a little confused by this question... so before I answer I'll just ask... is their some meaning in having gold elf in quotes and the word must surrounded by asterisks?
