What do Archfiends, Elder Gods and Fey Lords have in common? They get angry when you waste the power they grant you on a frigging rat.

Oh, oh, I can play this game as well!

What do Archfiends, Elder Gods and Fey Lords have in common? They love it when you use the power they grant you. They literall don't care how you use it, at all!

I know because I had tea with them last week.

"How can you be so sure Stonebridge is host to an underground cabal of fiendish warlocks Ser Tristram?"

"Open sewers... yet no rats..."

First of all, switch to the non-hallusinagenic drugs for a bit. You really confused those people at Denny's.

Second, this is a role playing game. Characters play a role in a story. The story features many NPCs that the DM controls. A good DM will make some of these NPCs meaningful players in the stories of the PCs. Warlocks, clerics, paladins and other PCs with a strong tie to an uber powerful being should feel the presence of those beings in the world of their characters.

How that manifests is up to the DM and player. However, the basic idea of a role playing game is to build a great story, and a great story usually spins around conflicts. When you've sold your soul for power, the relationship between the buyer and seller is often contentious.

If a warlock in one of my games were to disrespect the power he was granted, there would be consequences. This is not to say that I would punish the player. No, there would be consequences not as punishment, but because it makes for a better story.

Yeah, don't really care about your game and your personal prejudices. It's not relevant to the topic at hand.

Well, this is going downhill fast.

To the original topic: My first reaction was "You can't sustain hex through a short rest," but after some thought I've changed my mind. The long duration of hex in higher-level slots strongly implies that it's meant to be sustainable through short rests.

That being the case, I prefer to allow the PC to just cast the spell without a target. The bag of rats is one of those things that's amusing the first time, but quickly becomes annoying. Plus, while highly appropriate for the Fiend patron, it's less so for, say, the Archfey.

Without taking a side, the long duration isn't indicative of any intent to be maintained through a short rest. It's merely indicative it can be maintained for that time period. Short rests don't have to happen.

On the other hand, it's also not indicative that it can't be maintained through a short rest, either. The duration is quite mum about short rests.

I disagree that my comments were not relevant.

The question at hand is whether you can maintain concentration through a short rest on a Hex spell. My comments relate to other considerations outside the concentration and rest rules that should be considered when approaching the situation.
