D&D 5E I Was Wrong!!!!!

Before 5E landed Monks were one of my least favorite classes due to experience in AD&D, 3E and the whole kung fu vibe.

The 5E Monk might be one of the best designed classes in the game, I enjoyed playing it and one of my players who was perhaps even more reactionary than me rolled one up and enjoyed playing it.

This from a guy who usually just plays human fighters and Paladins, its rare to see him with a Dwarf and almost unheard of to play an Elf. IN 5E he broke and played a Monk and a High Elf battlemaster. his was also the same guy who abused Sharpshooter, GWM and Polearm Master back in 2014 when 5E landed. Myself I usually play whatever the pary needs so in 5E this means I have learned to like the cleric and bard.

Only took him 7 or 8 years to change his mind, damn flip- flopper. Took me 20 years to like the monk, still do not like the Kung Fu vibe but at least its not a crap class anymore.

I do agree that they should have more fluff to help with styles of Monk outside of Kung-fu eastern monks, like an MMA style pit fighter.

The monk itself though, I love the mechanics of. Flexible, mobile, enough damage to not be a detriment to the party. Also able to scout in ways the rogue can only dream of, being able to walk up walls like they are nothing, or practically fly over chasms and the sort.

... still do not like the Kung Fu vibe...

So go western monk with a full tonsure and good at fisticuffs. :) Guided by an inner peace brought by long study in cloistered solitude. Pass your character off as a cleric in RP and introductions. Then beat up the hooligans that get out of hand. The gods help those who help themselves.

EDIT: In our upcoming Zeitgeist game, one of the players is planning on playing a monk with a tinkerer background specializing in steam pipes and other technology in the Zeitgeist setting. He wields a light hammer as his monk weapon and likes to jump up and hit enemies or jump long distances or jump kicking down on an enemy. He is planning on using fire element archetype in the PHB to shoot fire.

There's nothing stopping a player from making a street fighter monk. I'm playing one whose unarmed attack is a plain old fist and his background is that he grew up around street gangs. There's nothing kung fu at all about him.

I am pleased that you have finally taken the first step on the path to wisdom.

5e monks are a bit too well-designed, compared to all the long-rest style classes. They basically do everything.

In our game we have found that the monk is great at almost everything except delivering and surviving damage. He wins initiative and starts setting up targets for the fighter, but every once in a while he gets hit hard and ends up face down.
