Pathfinder 1E [IC] - TIDERULER OF MARAN

MORGRYM/MARIUS (N-20)

[Grontar’s the man. As for Dram, well… See below, hehehe! Thanks for locating the link. I wasn’t logged in when I posted it!]

Morgrym finds a hidden spot between two formations, towards which he’s soon followed by Arvana. The woman prepares her bow and aims. “Just in case” – she mentions, as if to explain her posture to the dwarf. Morgrym conceals the dagger in place even she wouldn’t think – or dare – to search.

In the meantime, Marius slyly sneaks deeper into the camp. After writing his message, he vanishes amidst busy dwarves, overhearing the conversation between the leader and his rangers.

(…)

“I doubt it” – the ranger says.

“Even so, keep your eyes up. We need the ritual to be complete. Without the Tideruler, there is no point in trying.”

“What if Dram gets greedy?”

“Adalous Dram does not care for power. He only wants to use the Enslaver one more time.”

“Did he lose something?”

“In a way. The Tideruler would only keep him apart of his needs.”

The ranger nods in doubt. “What stops him from joining the city, then? Doesn’t it grant a man’s deepest wishes?”

“Even if he believes in it… Well, that is why I march against the city tonight.”

“What about the messengers?”

“Grontar chose them for a reason. They were carefully chosen, odd as it may be. Favors were called upon, pacts were formed. They must remain with Adalous Dram until the Tideruler is ours.”

“A monk, a priest, a sailor, a saurian. Honor-bound. Poor choice.”

“Take it up with Grontar Ironsight.” – the leader’s eyes become clouded by sentiments difficult to grasp.

“They might try to destroy the think…” – the rider shivers. “I know I would.”

“And betray Maran? Unlikely. Either they condemn the souls ensaved by the dagger or they condemn innocent maranans.” – he falls silent for a second, enough for another dwarven soldier to show up, waving the message Marius left moments ago.

“Sir…” – the soldier looks livid, lowering his head as he delivers the message to the leader. The clad dwarf stares at the paper for a while, not a word coming from him. He trembles, but only Marius’ trained eyes can see it. The dwarf that brought the message is about to leave, but the leader holds him by the arm.

“Did you read it?” – the other confirms with a shy, fearful nod.

“Say nothing. To no one. Specially to her.”

He looks his ranger in the eye.

“Each and all of us will have to sacrifice until we see the end of it.” – he squeezes the paper with his fist, and then pushes it against the rider’s chest. “Destroy it once you’ve read it. You know your duties.” – the clad dwarf leaves, heavy steps and a somber face, to vanish between two tents.

The rider’s eyes break with sadness as they rise from the message. He moves towards the bonfire, his colleagues watching in doubt, and after a moment’s hesitation, he burns the parchment, allowing the message to disappear. Slowly, he rises his eyes, and they cross Marius’ by accident. Suddenly, the monk knows he’s been spotted, but the dwarf seems startled, still incapable of action upon his discovery.

“Goddess…!” – Arvana’s voice whispers to Morgrym. “The rider. He sees Marius… He sees him! What-do-I-do-what-do-I-do… She glances quickly at Morgrym. “I can kill him… Do I kill him? I don’t wanna…” – she seems desperate.

[You have a few seconds before he does something – alerts the encampment, attacks, or whatever. What do you do?]

HAGADARK (N-23)

[Guile is going to be necessary, trust me, hehehe]

Ho-og, the pure-blood warrior, raises an axe and roars towards Hagadark.

“Save your speeches, half-breed!” – Klutha goes for the sword as the other one spits his words. “This ‘blessing’ seems odd to me…” – he walks towards Tugg, staring at his blood-red, gleaming eyes. “Talk to me, brother. What do you feel?”

Mhuagra simply smiles, drooling as an orc would by twisting his lips. Her eyes roll from Hagadark to Ho-og, no answer coming from her.

“Blessing… How can I know this is not one of your tricks?” – as his voice rises, so does the risk of losing advantage against the giant creature. Klutha twists her face, realizing the dangers that grew slowly in that hall.

“Yes, shaman… How could he know?” – Mhuagra’s voice rises in mockery. “How far would you go, shaman?”

Ho-og’s face grows distrustful, as that of the other pure-bloods. Klutha braces herself, preparing for battle, but looks still towards Hagadark, as if begging for a solution.

Marius quickly puts finger across his lips and with the motion of the head indicates commanders tent. He looks the rider in the eye, asking for silence. Silently :)

“Easy, lass…” Morgrym murmured to Arvana, putting a hand on her arm. “Le’s see ‘ow this plays oot. Dunnae reveal our position yet, or we’ll ‘ave the ‘ole camp on us in two shakes.”

Still, Morgram began to prepare a spell, just in case.

Ho-og’s face grows distrustful, as that of the other pure-bloods. Klutha braces herself, preparing for battle, but looks still towards Hagadark, as if begging for a solution.

"Soooo...now that I call for a fight, you balk. And you listened when I suggested skulking around. If I didn't pick finest warriors of the tribe, I would think you coward, Ho-og. Since you're not, look at her..." - he motions toward Tugg - "Would Tugg-Face-Biter respond with such question or try to bite my face off!?"

Hagadark starts toward the hunter drinking the potion as he passes by Klutha.
"Let me remind you why I am half-blood shaman." as he approaches mutagen starts working its magic and slightly built human-like frame bulges, filling its too big armor, the face elongates and orcish tusks appear. Height remains unchanged however and now orc warrior stands above Ho-og.
"Will you fight me over my blood? Or the giantess for the greater glory of Mhuagra?" he looks at the orc for the moment, baring his tusks before brushing by him
"I lead by example, not by talk. Follow me into the fight."
He passes Tugg on the way.

OOC: Assuming To-og is insecure enough not to attack and that Tugg-Mhuagra doesn't stop him, Hagadark moves back into boar pit cavern. He readies extract to enlarge himself if combat starts on this side of the narrow passage.
Archon Basileus, you're keeping us separate and we'll meet when we level up :)
Hagadark would set his hunters beyond the passage, hidden among the stones and then lob a firebomb into the pit so the boars squeel and call the ogre into an ambush...

MORGRYM/MARIUS

Arvana holds back. Soon after, they see he dwarf entering a pavilion, closely followed by Marius.

“What the…? How can we cover him like this?” – she raises, as if to start towards the camp.

As Morgrym whispers focusing mantras, his eyes glance at the desert. A cloud of sorts rises from the horizon, as if something stirred the sands up north. On the opposite side, back at the camp, the sounds of weapons, horses and war cries fill the air.

***

The rider goes inside the commander’s tent without a word. He does not take his eyes away from Marius, as well. As soon as he passes through, he stops by the side of the path, as if to wait for the other one to come in. His hand goes down to the hilt of a combat dagger, showing that he wouldn’t leave his guard down.

[If Marius follows him inside, he receives the monk with a stern gesture at a safe distance, speaking as follows. If not, just describe the action(s). Either way, he does not take his eyes out of the monk.]

The rider mumbles and spits to the side.

“You got explaining to do, friend. Sure you’re tall for a dwarf. Hunching is smart. But I got good eyes.”

HAGADARK

[You’ll be together sooner than you think, hehe. But chasing each other – or fleeing each other – is part of the game right now. Besides, I’m just about to set the table for the main course. :)]

Ho-og grunts as Hagadark questions both his courage and loyalty. Klutha’s laughs only add to the embarrassment he feels. He mumbles and shows his tusks, but turns his gaze away as the now taller Hagadark challenges him. The shaman managed to intimidate the warrior, at least for now.

The hunting party returns to the other chamber. Instead of arriving with great noise, Tugg-Mhuagra turns to the alchemist instead, and in a hushed tone, asks him “How would you go about it, shaman?”. The hybrid crosses its arms over the chest, walks around the towering shaman and starts again, loud enough so the others would listen. “Give me blood, shaman. Show me your ways, and I you show you mine. I will give you power.” – she retreats, waiting for his decision. The others look towards Hagadark with a mixture of confusion and admiration.

Aside from the boars, there’s no sign of the returning giantess. At least, not for now.

"I would use the area, we are mountain warriors. There are boulders in the next room where we can lay an ambush. I would hurt boars in the pit so their squeeling calls the witch. Once she comes, she will be in wide area, one against many. It would be a hunt, not a battle."

Turning to assembled orcs and fractions thereof, Hagadark looks at each of them ending with Ho-og.
"No tricks here, warriors. We're in the presence of Mhuagra, Mother of Mysteries, Teacher of Blood Magic." he cuts along one of his tattoos, representing his status among the orcs and worth as a shaman. Revealing it to all, just to remind them he's not some semi-demi-quasi-orc, but a Blessed One.
Showing the blood to all, he cups his hand and lets the arm down so it flows into his hand while preparing one of his bowls in the other.

"Come everyone, share your blood with mine, quickly and quietly!" the shaman offers sacrificial bowl to the hunters.

After all (hopefuly) participated, he offers it to Mhuagra
"Our blood, our power, our sacrifice to you, Great One. I beg of you, if you need death to satisfy your thirst on the boars for the moment, for these hunters are on a mission. We sacrifice The Trickster Witch to you after you lead us to victory. You could take her body as she took your teachings. Parts of you are already there."
He bows his head down, but keeps the cupped hands up for her to take, drink or whatever. He hopes he will not lose a warrior, another warrior to the spirit. Powerful they are, and willing to share, but thirsty.

HAGADARK

"Come everyone, share your blood with mine, quickly and quietly!"

The hunters participate in the ritual, Ho-og being last. Before he bleeds for the spirit, he stares into Hagadark’s eyes. Slowly, his eyes move down, towards the tatoo and the cut left behind by the sacrifice. Somehow, Hagadark’s words are enough to intimidate the warrior. He falls silent, allowing the blood to flow, and retreats, subdued for the time being.

Tugg-Mhuagra takes the offering with an abrupt gesture. Hagadark’s unshaken hand feels her strength, far more vigorous than
Tugg’s. She drinks from their shared bloodm smiling to the shaman.

“You wear authority well, shaman. We’ll see how far does it go.”

You could take her body as she took your teachings. Parts of you are already there.
“Indeed, I could. But the giantess is not from the blood. She is neither worthy of Mhuagra, nor of the tribes.”
She walks to the back of the cave. The others give her passage, bowing their heads. It seems the gravity of the situation finally sunk in, as they are prone to listen and obey.

“Prove your worth, orcs. I’ll be watching.” – she seats by the entrance, covered in dark, her red eyes the only thing to hint her presence to those unfamiliar with darkness.

[Ok, you can use the same map for the boulder room. Since you lead the party, you can determine who will do what, and at this point, everyone will obey, even lonely pure-blooded Ho-og. You can prepare and position them at will. These are your remaining hunters – after Tugg’s loss:

- Klutha – female half-orc barbarian warrior – two-handed sword/medium armor
- Frysis – female half-orc ranger – daggers/bow and arrows/light armor
- Gargan – male half-orc ranger – sword/bow and arrows/medium armor
- Ragah – male half-orc warrior – shield and lance/javelin/medium armor
- Ho-og male orc warrior – two-handed war axe/medium armor

OOC: I was about to complain that only Hagadark got his piece when I realized my previous post in the tent got eaten by the forum goblins :(

Marius enters the tent and straightens up to his full height removing the helm. His long hair falls down his back and the uniform shimmers as it is replaced by gold-black kimono, formal wear of a dragon monk.

He bows to the rider.
"Good eyes, indeed, good dwarf. I am Marius Soarleaf, one of the four sent - and I wrote the message in case I don't get to the commander unnoticed. I didn't expect it to be discovered so soon. I'm sorry for your loss." he bows again.

"We went under, fought off some fish-people, ambushed and killed Vradna, one of the dragon-creatures. We destroyed his armor, foul thing of dark magic. Can I talk to your commander? I don't want to repeat myself.

I overheard part of your discussion. With what we learned, it would be bad idea to use the dagger. For anything. And I need to return soon or my companions may go without me. The dagger takes priority and don't know where Adalous Dram is."

OOC: Note that Marius has low CHA, he's direct, non-sympatethic to the loss (but polite) - since we're talking dwarves here, there will be very little fine-point diplomacy, I guess :)

“You wear authority well, shaman. We’ll see how far does it go.”
"Thank you, Great One."

“Indeed, I could. But the giantess is not from the blood. She is neither worthy of Mhuagra, nor of the tribes.”
"Of course, stupid of me to offer such. But her blood..."

“Prove your worth, orcs. I’ll be watching.” – she seats by the entrance, covered in dark, her red eyes the only thing to hint her presence to those unfamiliar with darkness.

"OK, orcs, lets do this! Ambush like against the invading ogres of your homelands. They enter the killing ground, we shoot, we charge, we win! Do not break the ambush before time."

[sblock=Neurotic]
Neurotic: thanks.
[/sblock]

"Klutha on the right, keep your charging line clear. You charge as soon as I cut her retreat or the attack starts. Watch that you don't block one another.
Ho-og, between those rocks there. You charge when the ogre enters this here circle.
Frysis, once the target enters the circle, you're opening fire. Your arrow is the sign of full attack. If you lose sight, Ho-og, you are experienced warrior, you sign the start by charging. Or if she comes from the right since you'll be spotted from that side.
Ragah, charge right after Ho-og. Your lance should be quite devastating in such setup.

I will be here, up front, but low, I will cut her off regardless of which side she comes from.

If we're detected by the boars, shoot them, charge them, but don't forget, the giant woman is a witch of some kind. She is the main target. If we're detected, I'm going for her immediately. Frysis, your task is the interrupt any spell she attempts if we're detected early. Shoot once she starts gesturing or speaking nonsense. No earlier."

Now hide!

Hagadark moves next to Tugg/Mhuagra and lobs a flask into the pit where it explodes over captured pigs. Resultant squealing would wake the dead. It certainly causes his teeth to ache. He runs back to his place and takes cover readying tanglefoot bag as he goes.

MORGRYM/MARIUS (N-20)

The rider agrees to call the commander, but asks in return that Marius subtly retrieves his colleagues and shows proof of having the dagger. The dwarf offers to escort him towards their hideout, as well as back into the camp. In fact, he seems very adamantine about it. Despite seeing Marius’ true visage, he’s still a bit distrustful, keeping a firm handle around his weapon’s hilt at all times.

“No offense, monk. But if you tell me the truth, no reason to fear, yes? And you’ll be seeing the captain in no time.”

[If Marius abides, he’ll start with the monk towards Morgrym’s hiding spot. On the other end, Morgrym and Arvana can prepare, being aware of any happenstances, since they have the vantage point]

HAGADARK (N-23)

Each hunter follows the shaman’s instructions to the letter. The beasts squeal a deafening chorus of fear as they jump and bash against the stone walls of the depression, desperate to find a way out. As the hunters wait, they begin to hear the heavy steps of the giant creature coming from below. At first, they’re distant, but as they draw closer, they begin to rival the painful cries of the boars.

All of a sudden, the steps fall silent. Beneath the dying squeals, and answer comes. Chains sliding, falling to the ground in the adjacent cave, below, and a pair of furious cries coming from that direction. The hunters expected for the giantess, but all they see is the sudden explosion of her pet boars. They enter the room, roaring and leaping in rage, as if they had been provoked to a rage by their siblings’ cries! As soon as they arrive, they begin to snff around, looking for potential attackers.
