Maka will attempt to knock his beetle to the ground, and if he can do so, he will follow up with a kick, akin to that of a field goal kicker, trying to score an extra point.
GM: The airborne beetle reacts faster than Maka, clacking at him with its mandibles.
OOC: Beetle: 8(lethality) + 12(Attack) + 80(d100) = 100
Maka: 9(Konokoro) + 11(Defensiveness) + 72(d100) = 92
Damage: 100 - 92 = 8% * 6: ineffective

While the beetle does, indeed, make contact, its clasp is ineffective.

GM: As Maka steps backward to avoid the mandibles, he brings his bow down like a staff to club the beetle.
OOC: Maka: 12(Fury) + 20(Lethality) + 20(Attack) + 72(d100) = 124
Beetle: 4(defensiveness) + 8(defend) + 80(d100) = 92
Damage: 124 - 92 = 32% * 10 = 3 - 2(soak) = 1
Mind: 2 - 1 = 1: dazed

The beetle does go down, but it lands righted, though shaken.

Adisakti reacts next.

Adisakti will move in and hit the beetle where in the same place as the last one, so that it flops over.

Taylar intends to shift his grip down to one end of this club again and deliver another sweeping blow to any beetle still standing.

He says out loud, "So when we get home we should tell them these beetles were as wide as our torso's with mandibles as long and hard as knives."

Adisakti will move in and hit the beetle where in the same place as the last one, so that it flops over.
GM: The beetle takes to the air and is on Adisakti before he can react.
OOC: Beetle: 8(lethality) + 12(attack) + 80(d100) = 100
Adisakti: 12(Konokoro) + 10(Defensiveness) + 44(d100) = 66
Damage: 100 - 66 = 34% * 4 = 1 - 1(deflect) = 0

The mandibles clasp into Adi's wool tunic but do not penetrate to flesh.

GM: Reacting instinctively, Adisakti slams his staff down with his hands still separated from his intended blow.
OOC: Adisakti: 11(Fury) + 19(Lethality) + 18(Attack) + 44(d100) = 92
Beetle: 4(defensiveness) + 8(defend) + 80(d100) = 92

Adi manages to extract himself from the beetle but is unable to harm it in the process.

GM: Though Maka and Adisakti are unable to eliminate their second beetles with their initial reaction to them, it is only a matter of statistics to finish them, since the insects have proven to pose no real threat.

OOC: Waiting the appropriate time for the toxic fumes to dissipate after cracking the bodies, the party is able to collect all 10 pairs of elitra from the green beetles.

Raven Elk says to his friends:

"I'll help with gutting, cleaning and packing the elitra; but first, I want to see if I can track where they came from and make sure there aren't any more. I'll call out if I find anything we may need to tackle."

Raven Elk then scopes out the ground from the direction the cutters had come and tracks the scuttle marks/spoor to there point of origin.

Taylar intends to shift his grip down to one end of this club again and deliver another sweeping blow to any beetle still standing.
GM: Taylar sees that Maka and Adisakti are able to eliminate their remaining beetles before he could reach either one.

After cleaning one of the beetles, Vittero holds up two of the wing coverings in front of his chest.
"Hey Taylar! Maybe not yours, but this carapace is as wide as my torso. It would be slightly wider than Maka's or Adi's. These mandibles are as big as knives. If we did not have iron to our advantage, I could image our ancestors utilizing this for a blade."

Hunting:

  • Sense Animal (Collegiate Task) +
  • Mind + Knowledge +
  • Commercial
This active task is applied to finding and identifying animals by their passage. The specificity of the information known is determined by the rarity of the animal.

Raven Elk: 10(Sense Animal) + 12(Hunting) + 83(d100) - 50(rarity) + 25(terrain) = 80

GM: The distinctive marks left by the spiked feet of the beetles are easy enough to follow in the softer ground of this particular hill. Following the tracks down the hill and into a narrowed valley, it appears that the beetles have been nesting in a natural pile of fallen leaves that have collected in hollow. Poking through the debris with his spear, Raven Elk does not discover any others, but he does uncover several extremely large grubs, possibly even larval forms of the deceased beetles.

Raven Elk, grabs his small leather sack out of his carry-all/satchel and picks one of the 3' grubs, dropping it into the sack while thinking to himself: "I'll take this back to Ma. She may find it useful in her work/studies. Ma will know."

He then kills the rest and heads back to the battle site, informs the others of his find, helps clean and prep at least one of the beetle's elitra and mandibles, then goes over to the remaining plants to see if there is hope for a quick recovery of the plant(s) to fill up the area as it once was. Observing the plants' level of growth, seeding, etc to take the information back to Ma, so they can come up with a plan to protect them --- if they can.
