D&D 5E Ok I have to ask..... what's with the Paladin hate on here?

I see it everywhere on here, and I'm just curious. Is it just a running inside joke between long term members, or is there some kind of legit reason I'm unaware of?

I've never really been a very big Paladin fan UNTIL 5e. I absolutely love the 5e Paladin.

I summon lowkey13, who seems to be the most frequent spokesman for antiPaladinia in the area.

...If only I can get this wand to work... (bonk bonk crunch) :hmm:

I dunno, I've enjoyed playing paladins in the past, and have never had a problem them in other campaigns.

I don't see a problem with them, personally. In fact I think I'd quite enjoy playing one. But if I had to guess, people may not quite like the way smite allows a paladin to go nova in ways that other classes cannot achieve. It is a lot of damage, and it is nice that it gets tacked on after the attack is determined to be successful, and it benefits from double damage with critical hits. So in terms of damage potential, paladins have an ability to wreck DM plans and make fights anticlimactic.

If there is any problem with the paladin, that would be my guess. Which again, I think smite is fine. Just like everything in 5e, its a limited resource.

Old-school baggage, I suspect.

In days of old when Paladins were notoriously fussy about the company they would keep (no evils, chaotics only on the very short term) someone sticking a Pally in a party had a lot to say about what anyone else could play; due to these restrictions. This - quite rightly - gave them a bad name.

They have yet to recover.

It's really just a long-running joke started by lowkey13 - he really does seem to hate paladins. I think after some of us teased him about it, it became a more widely used gag.

You will also see the same effect spreading from lowkey's hate of gnomes and rapiers to a lesser extent.

Yeah I remember those days. I remember not being able to play a Rogue/Thief because of the Pally in the group. That was a long time ago though.

I poke fun at paladins, but the truth is I'm playing one right now and I love him.

There's no inside joke, just hipster BS making fun of popular things and the people who like them. Paladins consistently rate high in the power rankings and player satisfaction polls that I've seen. I can't speak for anyone else, but when I rip on paladins it's just because it's more fun than taunting 4 elements monks.

Yeah, I'd say that's definitely it in my experience.
