D&D 5E Walk Like An Egyptian

Zardnaar

Legend
I want to do an OSR type Egyptian themed D&D with neo Greeks and Romans as well. I have a few 3pp adventures and things like Kobolds Tome of Beats which has Egyptian themed monsters in it.

I'm thinking of low level Mummy's and Tomb Raider type games with the worlds equivalent of Giza and the Sphinix being melted heaps (Dragonfire). Recycling names from Mystara I have.

Nithia (Egypt)
Thyatis (Rome)
Milenian (Greek)

Nithia will have a big city with the desert full of Gnolls. I want to build it up to an extra planar encounter with the inhabitants of a tomb being put in stasis instead of undead. . The inhabitants will not be human but will be my worlds version of the ancients- think Netheril, Atlantis, etc. I may even set it on an alternative earth and actually use a map of the eastern med replacing some empires with non humans. The game will be more dark ages in tone with the better types of armor such as full plate being unavailable for purchase although you may be able to find suits in various places. Thyatis is in decline and I think I will use the IRL Egyptian., Greek and Roman pantheons and time shift a few things so fantasy Norway will be full of Vikings, fantasy England may be the Elven lands, barbarian tribes are Orcs, Gnolls etc.

Low level threats will be Mummy's, skeletons, Gnolls, zombies, and constructs lots and lots of constructs. Fantasy north Africa will have great city states, and I may transpose things like Sheba and Mali onto Fantasy Africa. Greyhawkian Mystara is kind of the the goal.

Anyway just a brianstorm thread for anyone with ideas, encounters or anything like that to help me out.

A week or so ago you were asking for help inventing an entirely different setting. Maybe you could lay down some ground work and show some indication that you're invested in the idea before you ask the public to spend their time contributing to it?

Nope part of the same thing. That was a high level adventure idea which involved pyramids. That is more towards the end level 12-15.

Oh I also have 3 factions the Curators, Guardians and Golden Falcon Antiquities.

And maybe you should consider that sometimes people just want some outside ideas for a project....

Have you read Illium & Olympos by Dan Simmons?

Maybe not completely compatible with what you're brewing I think, as there's a hefty dose of Sci-Fi, but also maybe.... Your mention of chabging things & setting it all on an alternate Earth brought it to mind.
I read Illium while on medical leave a few years back. And then because I couldn't not find out how this wild mish-mash all ended I had to read Olympus.
It starts off odd & disjointed and gets better the further you read until it all comes together.
After about 1500 pages all total? My review would be "Huh. Well that was different."

Gotcha. It may be helpful to point to or resurrect that thread so potential contributors have a little more background to work with.

The more we're given, the more we can give back. I like to help people, but the information provided thus far and the question ("Good ideas?") is too vague for me to feel like I can make a meaningful contribution. I'm not trying to shut the thread down, I'm asking Zardnaar to enable me (and others) to do something more than shoot into the darkness and hope we hit something.

Zardnaar I’ve found lots of inspiration in Green Ronin’s Mythic Vista line of d20 products when it comes to kinda real-world settings. In particular I like Egyptian Adventures: Hamunaptra; there is a real nice blend of fantasy and inspired-by real world politics. There are some cool monsters, spells, prestige classes, magic items and such, but the best parts are the cultural ideas. I combined bits of GURPS Egypt with Hamunaptra, and plan on doing some conversion to 5e for an upcoming game.
