RFC: Iconic D&D Cities

GreyLord

Legend
If you look at Dragonlance...you HAVE to include Solace. It may be a small village in the trees (our under them later) but for some reason, that little village is the START OF ALMOST ALL THE MAJOR events in the Dragonlance universe. It's central to the start of the original modules, and central in later adventures. Even if Palanthas IS the city...Solace is the LOCATION.

In a similar vein...Shadow Dale in the Forgotten Realms. Though not as highly highlighted in the modules, Shadowdale is the Original Forgotten Realms...or at least the central part of Ed Greenwoods Campaign for his group of players. It's where they heroes go to rest and rejoice...and at least originally, the home of that great Sage...Elminister. It is not the city (Waterdeep is that for FR) but it is the LOCATION (well...beyond Myth Drannor that is).

I wasn't making myself very clear.

There are people that are REALLY into a given setting, and that's totally cool! For example, if you're really into FR, then I'm sure you can think of tons of cities, towns, and so on that are important to FR. Same with GH or most campaign settings.

What I was trying to get at is that, for purposes of keeping the numbers manageable, I want to keep the number of cities that are included because they are important to a setting down to a minimum (no more than three, and maybe just one).

But if there is an independent significance- like a beloved computer game (Baldur's Gate) or module (Village of Hommlet) or even an edition-specific reason (5e and Phandalin) that they wouldn't be counted as the "setting" city.

Make more sense?
Gotcha!

Probably going to be fairly unmanageable, because most settings have several notable/memorable locations. For Greyhawk alone, in addition to Greyhawk itself, I could easily suggest Dyvers, Dorakaa, Highfolk, Irongate, Rauxes, Rel Astra, Verbobonc, and even Erelhei-Cinlu. Realms easily has dozens, and I'm sure even the lesser known settings are going to have quite a few. You could probably do a survivor series for most settings!

I'm a big Greyhawk buff, so I'll throw in my two copper for it. Assuming you keep Greyhawk (because duh), I'd say Highfolk and Verbobonc are probably the front runners. I like Irongate and Rauxes, because of the conflict between the Malachite Throne and the Iron League, but I know it's not as popular. Erelhei-Cinlu could be added as an "other," as it's the infamous Vault of the Drow.

For suggestions, either put in the Campaign (and explain why it is more important to that campaign than the one listed) or in Others and suggest a removal. :)

Why don't you iconic cities of each setting complete against each other, and then have the winners take on each other.

From GH, I'll add the hidden city of Suderham (from the Slave Lords series) to the list of potential candidates.

Gradine

The Elephant in the Room (she/her)
Too many threads; in addition, FR, GH are the only ones that could really produce any meaningful discussion. And FR would have the additional issue of having other settings in it (such as AQ).

You could easily get there with Eberron as well, but I highly doubt anything other than Sharn would take it in the end. Maybe Stormreach, which is basically your home base/point of light/only bastion of civilization for any Xen'drik based campaigns.

I get that the intent is to only include one city per setting, but I don't know how you can have an iconic cities survivor thread and not include Baldur's Gate; and not just because of the peripheral stuff (video games and comics); my understanding is that Murder in Baldur's Gate is a pretty well-loved module as well.

I think your main list probably pretty good, but for the 2nd tier stuff, I'd consider, in no particular order:
Stormreach - EB
Baldur's Gate - FR
City of Brass - GH? PS?
Solace - DL
Are the most iconic that come to mind.

You've got most of those; I'd ditch the 3PP for Stormreach, personally.
