Do you believe that classes are meaningful in terms of the fusion of lore and crunch?

Lowkey, not all philosophy majors work at McDonald's, some of them become PhDs and work at McDonald's.

As or class: people fight about Fighters all of the time, specifically if they should be Guy-at-the-Gym Jim, or Guy-at-the-γυμνάσιον (note, that's just Greek for Gymnasium) Odysseus. Some classes are relative broad, the rogue or fighter for example, while others are narrower, the paladin or warlock, but they are all there to 1) provide discrete packages of abilities that over the long haul are roughly comparable in utility to other classes and 2) ground the character clearly and specifically in the game world.

One point (2) I think some classes have more clear grounding, but even the broadest classes (fighter and rogue) are still grounded. A rogue is capable of dealing massive damage by targeting weak points, while a fighter is able to attack more frequently than any other class. Regardless of how a fighter got there all of them are peerless warriors (eventually) and every rogue is going to be able to target the weak areas of an opponent.

Y'know, that A Princess of Mars (ERB, 1918) had been the most almost-made movie in history? First optioned as a silent film. Almost done by Harryhausen (wouldn't that have been something?) decades later. Done, as "John Carter" only after the book fell into the public domain.

Almost the first feature-length animated film, too. That would have been interesting.

I am a huge fan of reskinning. If the mechanics fit, talk about them whatever way you want.

That said, there is only one class that has mechanical support over solely RP components, the Paladin with it's Oath. All because of the sidebar about breaking them.

So thank you @lowkey13, you have made me realize that the only class with class is the Paladin.

I did not know that!
Yep, fun, useless information. ;)
ERB's Barsoom was tremendously popular for generations, but they managed to out-wait that popularity before finally making a movie.

However, I'd bet that A Confederacy of Dunces is in the running for "almost made" movies; that thing is cursed; also? Never made.
Maybe if they attach Terry Gilliam to it?
Never heard of it.

TRISTRAM SHANDY**A Cock and Bull Story, and it's quite good, although, like Naked Lunch, it uses a lot of "meta" to make up for issues with filming the source material.
Seen 'em both, actually. Quite liked the Naked Lunch.

A. Class in meaningful; a class is a fusion of "lore" and "crunch." Call this the HC (hard class) category.

B. Class isn't meaningful, but is just a descriptor for a grab bag of abilities. The only thing that matters about class is the crunch of particular abilties. Call the is the NC (no class) category.

Yes.

In D&D, Class is both of those things. Quite explicitly too, I believe. It's a false dichotomy, even though they seem contradictory. Most classes are a pretty good combination of lore and crunch, but also at all points the default lore is optional, so maybe your Shadow Monk is a ninja, or maybe they're a jungle guerilla fighter.

Also Paladins are great and have never been better than in 5e.
