I just thought of another idea I have for a Greek themed campaign I'm working on: The god of the dead does not approve. In Greek Mythology Hades was said to get very upset if someone stole a sole from the Underworld. This has a couple of ramifications:
  1. Clerics of Hades are not allowed to cast any necromancy spells. (I would include reincarnate too, though it is transmutation).
  2. The Order of the Black Ram (a fanatic group of Hades worshipers) actively seeks out and eliminates undead and wizards/clerics who use necromancy.
  3. Every time you use a spell that brings someone back from death there is a % chance that Hades will release the Furies to bring the dead back to Erberos. The % goes up each time it is cast on an individual.
  4. If the group is too strong for the Furies, Hades may send an avatar of Thanatos to retrieve his lost soul.
This has the effect of limiting the general use of such magic. It is seriously taboo with real consequences. It is not an out right ban, but a serious restriction.

Sounds interesting!

I know there are plenty of story/campaign ways to do it (@Oofta explained his own about souls going to the Fell or something).

I think returning to a low-magic, low-treasure style of play would take care using raising spells, and using some of the ideas here will make the threat of death real enough given coming back will be difficult.

So what do you do in your game?
The point of my post was less what i do more what i dont do. I dont avoid killing pcs. My circle seems to enjoy their pcs survival more when its seriously likely that it wont happen. I dont run around trying to keep the characters alive. But i also dont constantly try to kill them. I also dont avoid killing them. When i play and others dm its the same. A dangerous world makes even safety feel like a well earned avheivement. And it often is. 5e makes the natural tendancy for survival (so long as your players color by numbers) very high. Too high imo. Ive been playing some 5e lately and its definitely a thing ive noticed.

Also ive yet to DM 5e. Ive only played it so far (a good bit considering how long ive been trying which isnt very. Couple months. Couple times a week though.) Something weve tried is the more death saves youve had in the last ingame month the easier it is to instantly die. Still doesnt "hit the spot" though satisfaction wise. We're looking for things to try though.

The dark one :)
I think that a low-magic low-treasure setting is the best to avoid cheating death easily. That or you need to house rule healing spells to make them more resource intensive and/or limited in some way. Or just limit the number of time a PC can be raised from death. There's plenty of options you just need to find the one that fits the best to your setting and discuss it with your players to avoid frustrating them 😉

Well there is lots of good advice in this thread that should help. Just find what works for you.
