D&D 5E What Level 20 Class Would Win?

Which Class Would Win?

Again, my point is the same. If a Wizard gets a simulacrum for the competition, he should not get his 7th level slot. Likewise, if a sorcerer wants one, he would forfeit his 9th level slot. I would not allow them to have those slots back, especially when you consider the benefit a simulacrum can bring.

why?

problem is divination wizard Virtually never loses initiative.
It still wouldn't matter, invulnerability gets cancelled by stunning strike. If they used their portent to win initiative, best case is they have 2 more to try to win the Con checks, which is probably unlikely.

Again, this is all assuming that the Wizard gets to cast spells or prep.

Assume 20th level monk.
Wins initiative (not assured, but 20 dex tends to help). Maybe he has "alert" too.

At 20th level, assuming no magic items (naked combat!) we have a monk that does:
d10+5 per attack.
You get the following damage (we will assume open hand, since I have an OGL handy):

d10+5 (attack), d10+5 (extra attack), d10+5x2 (flurry).

Plus:
Either instant death (failed constitution) OR 10-100 (quivering palm).

Plus:
three stunning strikes (three con saves or be stunned)

Now, if the Monk gets initiative and hits each time (not unreasonable), then:
22+20+ 44, + death OR 55 more points of damage (99), + three con saves or stunned.

That's .... going to be rough on the Wizard.

Again, if the Wizard has time to prep, it's not an issue. But if the Monk gets to blast the Wizard right out, that's going to be a serious issue.
Sure, but by "prep" I just assume has all their normal prepared spells ready. Definitely not casting anything before the fight begins. Since feats are allowed (or at least not disallowed by the OP), I would think Wizard would probably also have Alert. And War Magic gives +5 INT to initiative... So I don't think the Monk winning Initiative is a guarantee.

Again, not saying the Monk couldn't win, but unless it manages to win in the first round, it would likely lose IMO.

Simply because with Simulacrum you are fighting two foes instead of one. If the competition allowed it (why not?), there should be a cost IMO. But that is just my thoughts on it--certainly not a hard and fast rule or anything--and if the OP or whoever actually established the ground rules wanted to do it that way and restore slots, that would be their choice. But, if that is the case, either Sorcerer or Wizard should defeat anyone else really IMO...

Yeah, the are powerful through Portent. Take the high roll for your initiative and assign the low roll to your opponent. Like you said, virtually never lose initiative. With equal DEX and both have Alert, the Div Wiz will win initiative 95% of the time and tie 5%.

sounds more like an arbitrarily imposed limitation to try to bring fairness.

imo. If something can be precast the day before - Especially the wish version then It’s baffles me why doing so would be arbitrarily punished.

Yes, they're powerful. Div Wizard is very likely to win initiative, so is a Chronurgist or War Mage Wizard. Chronurgists are probably the best subclass to win as a wizard.

Why instead of wondering dont we just set up a tournament with rules?

Each contender post his lvl 20 character using option from phb only and selecting let's say 1 very rare, 1 rare and 2-3 uncommon magic items from dmg (because even if 5th edition restrained magic items I can't see how a 20th level character wouldn't own a single one).

Then we choose a terrain/arena setup, each character is informed of his oponent beforehand and may prepare accordingly (spell slot used in preparation are not regained) and then let's roll dices in virtual arena ^^

It would take a long time to organize such a contest but it would probably be better than if THAT then you can't win but what if THIS instead...best 2 out of 3 matchs for each count 1 point for each victory...
Well it's just an idea 😆
