What did you think was implied in repeatedly calling her a "true believer"?

She's supposed to be smart. If I got thrown forward 900 years I wouldn't expect my country to exist let alone my government.
How many countries existed 900 years ago? Hungary, France, Morocco, China, England? There's probably a few more I'm forgetting.

Might have to rewatch like some others as might have missed or not paid attention to certain lines of dialogue.

Obviously she'll met up with the rest of the crew and rebuild the Federation I suppose.

Hardly. As noted by someone else, this is really taken from Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda from 20 years ago - a ship of the Federation/Commonwealth is lost in time, and comes back to find the culture fallen, and sets about trying to re-establish what was lost. Roddenberry used similar themes in two other TV pilots in the early 1970s, before Star Wars ever happened.

So, no, not copying the Mandalorian.

Doesn't seem very Mandalorian to me either except maybe very superficially.

Andromeda hold up these days? It's on Amazon and need something to binge watch.

In any case I guess we will find out in time. I wonder how this season will pan out. If it does really well does this become the new baseline era for Star Trek? Or does everything else continue to focus around more known eras where the Federation is still fully intact?

The current plans as we know:
Discovery, Season 3
Picard, Season 2
Lower Decks, Season 2
Strange New Worlds
Section 31 (though, thinking of it, this could be a far-future Section 31...)
Star Trek: Prodigy (?) is another animated series for Nickelodeon, with confirmed Kate Mulgrew providing voice for Janeway, which fits it somewhere between Voyager and Picard. A bunch of kids steal a derelict Federation starship...

There is one other live-action series in the plans, but they have not revealed what it might be. Rumors suggest it may be centered on Star Fleet Academy. That'd probably be between Next Gen and Picard, imho.

There has been rumored talk of other material with Janeway and Sisko (not necessarily together), but nothing confirmed. This may be cameos on Picard (pretty likely, I think), or who knows - Star Trek: Captains?

So, most of the near-term plans don't seem to have Trek focusing on that far future.

I have half a guess that Discovery spends this season figuring out what causes The Burn, and then, as the only time-travel capable vessel around, they take off to keep it from happening. Discovery winds up hopping era to era each season...

IMHO, Andromeda fell apart mid-season 2. Depending on who you listen to..

1) Kevin Sorbo (lead actor, and also an exec producer) has said that it was because Robert Hewitt Wolfe's scripts were "too intelligent", and it was decided that the show would be more accessible if they were basically episodic action.

2) Kevin Sorbo decided the show needed to be more... The Kevin Sorbo show, focusing on his character, dropping the already established internal conflicts of the characters, so they could all support his central character.

Either way, they gave the Head Writer the boot, and they ran out of the scripts he had produced in the middle of season 2... and it is really notable. What started as a pretty intelligent and interesting show with some decent arc plot for the day became... Hercules in Space.

Think I'll pass then. Still not over his spot in Jim Beam ad.

There's lots of reasons to not like Sorbo at this point. Several of them probably fit under "politics", and don't bear discussion here.

... And this thread is about Discovery, not about Sorbo...

No idea I never found Sorbo compelling or interesting as an actor. Kinda forgot he existed being honest.

Was just digging through Amazon and Netflix looking for something to watch and saw his mug on the Andromeda thumbnail.
I tried Lexx last year. Mistake.

Heh. Lexx... at least made no claims to be other than what it was.

Bi didn't know anything about it except it involved spaceships. I vaguely remembered it from 1999 never watched it.

I'll give most sci fi a shot but it's very hit and miss kinda like Trek I suppose.

Lexx is something else. Is there a story in there somewhere? I think there is.

But yeah it doesn't pretend to be anything it isn't.

On the one hand, I laughed out loud and said to my wife, "What, she expected the Federation to still be around after all that time? Good luck with that!" during that scene.

On the other hand, your comment reminds me that it's always something that ruins them - one of the reasons you can't name other countries that lasted that long is because people went around the planet over the last 500 years, crushing existing civilizations and creating empires.

At least it was a disaster that took out the Federation and not a war. (Maybe.)

Honestly, if I was her, I'd be hoping that something better than the Federation existed by then. Not the Federation itself.

As an aside, I thought her comment on the personal transporter must have sounded like if someone said to one of us, "Hey, your carriages don't have horses!"
