That opening episode of season 3 might be my favourite season opener of any Star trek series.
I'm really excited for where they're going in this season.

It was a small detail, but the holographic-parrot alarm-clock at the very start was pretty damn cool.

Straight into it before the credits started.

Fun episode, better than last week with a better ending setting up the next episode.

I'm glad to see that the arrival of the rest of the crew wasn't too far off from Michael's. One theory I'd had kicking around in the back of my head was that maybe they'd arrived much earlier, and had somehow precipitated the Burn.

Hopefully the intervening time can be skipped over with a bit of exposition and a flashback scene or two, rather than having another solo Burnham episode to fill in the blanks.

Very good episode. Love the notion of holding to Federation standards no matter what. Very Star Trek. I'm very impressed so far. Best Disco opening so far for me.

I liked that one quite a bit. My only (minor) complaint is that I get a bit tired of the "I'm fine" stubbornly-avoiding-medical-advice TV trope. It's particularly tiresome in something like Star Trek, where medicine is generally so excellent and not inconvenient. It's also worse in Star Trek when the medical attention you need is therapy. Psychology is a young science NOW, but I really hope it makes huge advances by then.

Tyg had some good lines on the subject, though. (And eventually got attention for her back - I have no problem with the doctors being too busy to get to you for awhile - that's different).

I have half a guess that Discovery spends this season figuring out what causes The Burn, and then, as the only time-travel capable vessel around, they take off to keep it from happening. Discovery winds up hopping era to era each season...
Burnham blew up her time-travel suit . . . but they do have the plans to build it again still in Discovery's computers. All they would need is another time crystal!

But, time travel tech isn't unknown in this distant future either, just outlawed. Why hasn't somebody else dusted off some old time-travel tech to fix the issue already?

I don't think we'll see Discovery traveling back in time to prevent The Burn. The "rebuild the Federation" arc is so much more interesting anyway!

In which Star Trek steals names from me again! Lower Decks was the original name of my WOIN setting SolSpace, and The Burn is the name of the black hole at the centre of The Cauldron, my upcoming novel.

"Lower Decks" was the name of Next Gen Season 7, Episode 15, back in 1994, and that episode is the inspiration for the series. They have the prior art on that one.
