Trying to find some mapping software

AutoRealm looks super complicated, and really ugly. Definitely not.

No, I think it must have been a very old windows-based version of Dungeon Painter that I had. Unfortunately, it seems, I no longer have it.

I also use Tiamat The Tile Mapper from time to time. It's good for simple things. The interface is a little clunky.
Dunno if Dungeon Painter Studio is the same thing but that is still availlable on Steam.

I am not sure what you mean here? are not all maps area maps? I am going to guess outdoor, I have never used it for that purpose but there are assets there for that. I did have to look a the basic tutorial a few times to get the hang of the UI but have worked away since.
I have also used Donjon to pregenerate maps and import them to Dungeon painter. It gets the walls wrong but I strip the walls out easily and replace them.

Not really. A dungeon 'map' is actually a floor plan.

But I was referring to the map of a geographic area, such as a state, nation, or continent.

I have not used it for that purpose and while I am not an experienced user I would not say it is suitable for that purpose.

The terrain tiles can be used in freeform brush strokes there is only a square grid (as far as I can tell). I would be inclined to use something else for mapping large bits of geography.

About the only map software I know of that is specifically aimed at regional maps are Fractal Mapper and Worldographer, and neither of those are tile based or super easy (though Worldographer isn't really difficult).

Thanks! That's exactly what I needed to know.

Yea, I find it odd that some of these programs try to do everything. That just makes some of them super-complicated.

I've resorted to just using PowerPoint (it's my secret weapon). With a large enough library of tiles, and furniture, I can build whatever I want just by dragging it into a blank PowerPoint presentation. It already gives me the option of rotating stuff, and snapping tiles nicely together and evenly.

Has anyone tried Wonderdraft? I was thinking of picking it up. It is supposed to be easy to use, which is what I need, since I have the visual art skills of a color-blind chimp.

I've used wonderdraft (and now dungeondraft) for a couple of years now and really like them. There's a little bit of a learning curve, but they turn out high quality results without much effort. As with most mapping software, there's always room for more art assets, but the ones that are provided are actually pretty expansive and useful.

I highly recommend at least checking out some of the results online.

Edit: Here's an example dungeon I created in dungeondraft in about 20-30 minutes, and another of a town I created in wonderdraft for my RToEE campaign. The town map likewise took probably 20-30 minutes.

Wonderdraft is really well-suited to regional maps. In fact, that's it's purpose.
