What hooked you?

Out of curiosity: all you folks who say you couldn't get into shows like Game of Thrones or Sherlock or whatever ... what are some examples of shows you do like and that you consider to have good writing / acting / etc? This is all subjective, right, but it could be useful to have some means of comparison.

As not to clutter up another thread,

With Sherlock for me, it was the writing,acting and updating the technology used.

House: Because he's a jerk, says whatever he feels whenever and to whoever. I've been known to do the same on many occasions so I can relate. The writing is good and its funny.

I liked House as well, although I didn’t quite make it to the end. Same with Bones.

American TV makers need to start developing shows with a clear ending in mind, instead of coming up with an interesting premise that they can turn into a formula that they can milk for as long as possible.

I liked House as well, although it’s another example of a show that went on too long.

A lot of shows I only watched the early seasons. House, X-Files, Friends, Scrubs, NCIS, Simpsons.

There's probably more.

The Last Kingdom, Vikings, Sons of Anarchy, and Breaking Bad all hooked me. Sherlock, The Mandolorian, and Game of Thrones did not.

I love both Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra.

Also Warehouse 13.

American TV makers need to start developing shows with a clear ending in mind, instead of coming up with an interesting premise that they can turn into a formula that they can milk for as long as possible.

The problem with that is the audience/writing/advertise/net work executives/cast.

For Example Babylon 5 was originally plotted to have a five-season arc. When PTEN finally disintegrated and the show was not renewed for a fifth season, the fourth season was reworked to finish the arc. The show was subsequently granted a fifth season by TNT, but with almost all of its major plot threads resolved. To add to the problem, JMS’ original notes for season five were lost while he was attending a convention. The fifth season which resulted was noticeably boring and was composed partly of scripts that had been cut from earlier seasons for various reasons.

Shows I do love:

• Babylon 5. Season 2-3 are the best.
• Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Never got into Angel though (it took itself too seriously).
• Firefly
• La femme Nikita (The 90's show with Peta Wilson in the lead. The remake with Maggie Q was just meh to me, and I gave up after season 1)
