I do not think they are full droid, though. I got the feeling there are still bits of sentient creatures inside them, so more cyborg than droid. Maybe they house the brains of Force-sensitive sentients? Dark Troopers -- Dark Force sensitives.
Maybe! Hopefully we'll find out one way or the other before this season is over.

I love how they made it so he was literally smashing the stormtroopers' armor to bits with it.
I'm trying to figure out why the stormtroopers are wearing armour. It doesn't stop blaster bolts. It can be ripped apart with a heavy staff. Even a knight's armour was better.

It's intimidating?

I figure it's not armor, more a uniform with maybe some environmental stuff so they can hang out on Hoth or Tattooine.
Yeah, that's what I've always thought too. It's a uniform. Finn confirms the environmental stuff in The Force Awakens, when he's telling Rey how the mask doesn't filter out toxins or whatever.

As we've seen in this show, it doesn't even stop the troopers from being knocked out with a punch!

Shadow Droids.

Could be they look like robots atm but could be cyborgs.

Wookieepedia has got them down as combat droids, but they could still be cyborgs like Grievous and Vader with organic heads / torsos but fully mechanical arms and legs.

Out of curiosity, what is the idea behind making Force sensitive cyborgs?

It's why he never was able to do Force lightning, for instance.
Maybe he just didn't want to. I mean, maybe Lucas only thought of it when he made RotJ 90 seconds before Vader's death. It would have been weird for Vader to suddenly start force-lightning Luke too. He was the strong samurai sword guy; the Emperor was the wizened witch guy. I don't think it went beyond that,

Well that's weird. Your post doesn't say that any more. Must have edited while I was replying.

Yes, I edited it out. Sorry.

I seem to recall some source indicating that Vader couldn't use Force lightning because of his cybernetic hands, but that might be Legends material now. Probably some novel or other that I read ages ago.

Anyway, my point was simply that being a cyborg seems to be a disadvantage for Vader, so I'm not sure why you'd want to deliberately make a Force-sensitive cyborg.

On a side note, I'd be interested to note the extent and function of Fennec's cybernetic parts. It looks like her intestines have been replaced by mechanical bits. I wonder if that means she no longer has to eat or drink, or if there are machine parts that do what her intestines used to do. Just idle curiosity at this point.
