In addition to the excellent suggestion of OSE, bear in mind that 5th edition DOES have a Basic set.

It goes all the way to 20th level but doesn't contain the profusion of character options the main game does. It just includes "the big four" of Human, Dwarf, Elf and Halfling for races, and "the big four" of Fighter, Cleric, Wizard and Rogue for classes. Mind you, it still contains references to the other stuff; it's basically the PH just with that extra content chopped out.

Wasn't the Druid recently added to the 5E Basics?

Swords and Wizardry, by Frog God Games, is another one, as mentioned before. To my knowledge, it's pretty much retro clone 1st Edition Dungeons and Dragons with a name change and more modern options, like Ascending AC. Comes in three versions such as a very stripped down version, White Box, with the Complete version containing all the 1E classes IIRC.

I believe it also has a pretty nifty Norse themed cleric called the Northern Godi, via the White Box Heroes supplement, that has an entire Rune subsystem and certain themed abilities for it as well. It follows all the rules for the Cleric class in Swords and Wizardry otherwise outside of its small additions. And what makes it more interesting is that in order to use a Rune, you have to find it in the world and there are rituals that must be done in order to attune to the Rune. I kinda want to play said class in Mork Borg and have the character's entire plot revolve around finding all the Runes to supposedly prevent the world in Mork Borg from dying.

.........................................................keyword is: supposedly as even said character has no idea what will exactly happen once all the runes are collected. Could be a bloody raving fool as far as everybody else is concerned. Could damn the world even further. Or do absolutely jack russel.

If you want all the old school stuff with the modern ways of doing things....

Just play 5e with these limits:
Humans - can be Fighters, Clerics, Rogues, or Wizards.
1/2lings - can only be Fighters
Dwarfs - can only be Fighters
Elves - can only be be MC Fighter/Wizards. They must meet the MC restrictions at 1st lv, they begin with both classes at lv.1, and as they advance they must divide their xp in two & split it between their two classes (essentially it takes an elf double the xp to lv up as they're supporting two classes)

There are no other classes, there are no other races, there are no other race/class combos and other than with Elves there's no MC allowed. And Tasha's is not allowed.
No other changes to 5e.

There, I've saved you from having to read through about a dozen things all trying to copy the old stuff. Or having to rewrite the attack & save charts if you just pulled out the actual old stuff.
