Even in the absence of knowing exactly what spell it was, it's not unreasonable for an intelligent creature to figure there's a spell (or a spell attack, which doesn't have to be a spell, because 5E) and start looking for what's doing it. Sitting there until the psychic damage kills them--that seems unreasonably stupid to me.
I completely agree on that.
 

Nothing in the rules says it has to be visible, just that it does something you notice. You are going to be hard-pressed to argue that a creature doesn't actually notice the stabbing pain in his mind that leaves him weak and injured.

Perceiving a Caster at Work​

Many spells create obvious effects: explosions of fire, walls of ice, teleportation, and the like. Other spells, such as charm person, display no visible, audible, or otherwise perceptible sign of their effects, and could easily go unnoticed by someone unaffected by them.
You seem to be ignoring those last 5 words.
It was already quoted about a million posts ago but he does not answer to rules that contradict his own view of how we should play D&D
