I've never cared about professional sports (playing or watching friends play is a different issue). I mean, what are you cheering for? The players by and large don't come from your state. If they live in your state, it's probably temporary. That team you thought was awesome 10 years ago? Only people left from that era are the guys that run the show behind the scenes.

In other words, it always just felt like people were cheering for a uniform. So ... yay for that team with the purple and white uniforms I guess?

I'll definitely be watching the draft. Also currently listening to local sports radio talking about the draft.

I've found that following sports has more to do with where someone grew up and whether their family & friends followed sports than if they are a gamer or not.

Many, many reasons:

Local teams are an integral part of the region's history and community.
The team have a huge effects on the local economy.
You enjoy the competition and strategy.
You enjoy the camaraderie of analyzing and discussing the teams.

It's no different than any hobby.

I used to be a diehard NFL and 49ers fan, and I played fantasy football for nearly two decades (my first fantasy team had a young Shaun Alexander on it, to give an idea). That to me was the true intersection of Football and Nerds. Honestly, even at the heights of my Fandom I couldn't had have cared less about the NFL Draft. A good fantasy draft though...

Unfortunately, the NFL is garbage, and has been for quite some time, so I've moved on from the sport. Sports as a whole, really. I'll be a fairweather Sharks and SF Giants fan on occasion, but even then I'll only watch the playoffs, and even then only if I don't have something else better to do.

I get this. After I quit playing baseball at age 19, the last thing I wanted to do was watch any type of ball game. Then about 15 years later, I started incrementally getting back into watching it again.

I guess it's just fun to pick a side and root for them. Even if it's just because they're based locally 🤷
