D&D General MtG Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Spoiler Thread

A few things to keep in mind:
• The set was originally designed as a generic D&D themed magic set before the decision was made to put it in an actual D&D setting.
• Forgotten Realms was probably chosen as the setting to put it in because it’s the assumed default setting in 5e.
• This set is probably being targeted primarily at magic players and secondarily at 5e players.
• 5e does not currently have a 5e setting book, and it is not on DMs guild.
• Mordenkainen’s name appears in the title of a 5e book and he has appeared in a published 5e adventure path. Vecna has two artifacts that appear in the DMG, and Acererak has been the primary antagonist of a published 5e adventure path.

Agree with all your points. I just get a little peeved when fans of FR brag about "stealing" other setting's material... just adds fuel to my belief that FR has become an all-encompassing kitchen sink with a barely consistent premise.

And I say that as someone who runs a game in FR!

So the real question is, who is going to be the White Planeswalker? Is there a sufficiently iconic Cleric who hops from Plane to Plane...?

I think @Henadis actually unhappy that Eliminster apparently isn't the Blue Planeswalker, not pleased that Mordenkainen is visiting the Realms.

Given these facts, it’s likely that the majority of the target audience for this set is not terribly familiar with Grayhawk, but would likely recognize these characters anyway.

See above: for these reasons, it’s likely the majority of the target audience for this set isn’t terribly familiar with Elminster, but they would probably recognize Mordenkainen. I believe it’s also been confirmed that there is going to be a Mordenkainen card. It’s possible that his card could be a legendary creature and the blue planeswalker could be Elminster. But it seems more likely that Mordenkainen will be the blue planeswalker, which would mean if we get an Elminster card, it will probably be a legendary creature.
Makes sense to me!

About the number crunching...the cards are arrange alphabetical in the Collector numbers, and it seems that Eliminster isn't a Blue card, but there is definitely room for Mordenkainen.

Was it ever anything else? FR has been D&D's dumping ground since 2E. Got a new setting that doesn't change any fundamental laws of reality? Find a blank space on the map of Toril and stuff it in.

I don't know, maybe it always was. I think only Ed Greenwood really has an answer to that question, but I think the setting has since its inception gradually and methodically gone broader and broader over genre, like the same butter over an ever growing piece of toast. We have steampunk in Lantan, Conan wizard-kings in Thay, whatever the heck is going on in the Moonshaes, swashbuckling in Waterdeep and knights in Cormyr.

Eh, I responded to his stealing comment. I don't care who the Planeswalker is, this isn't a canon set anyway so these labels are largely meaningless.

Still, he wanted an Eliminster card, which is not happening in Blue.

Could Elminster be Red? Looks like there is an unrevealed card at spot 142, between Earth-Cult Elemental and Flameskull.
Possibly, but not a Planeswalker, as Zariel already has that slot. I dunno if Red would fit all that well, but he also can't be in as a multicolor character, so he may just be out. Maye they could throw in a Spell that references Eliminster...

Then again, if they do another D&D Set on another world, they can use Eliminster as a Planeswalker there...
