D&D General MtG Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Spoiler Thread

No. He's just made a lot of book money is all. Elminster is still the main character for the Realms.

Maybe 20 years ago (or more). FR seems to have moved on from him though.

This is a lot like saying Ned Stark is the main character of Westeros... when the setting completely forgets Elminster exists, how can he be the main character?

No it isn't. Magic has several settings with several "primary" characters. Urza isn't the main one for them all. Elminster IS the main one for the Realms
Is he though?

To clarify, are you talking primary character as a product, like being the most promoted or used in books or the most powerful character in world?

No. Again that's not at all the same.

like, in the past decade, what has Elminster been used on in the Realms?
Not much. Just like Drizzt. Products haven't had hardly any of him, either. None of that changes that he was and is the main character in the Realms. 30+ years doesn't get wiped out just because you want to ignore it like it never happened.

Drizzt just got a videogame about him... Sure 30 years don't get wiped out. But its hard to call a character who hardly appears the primary character today...

I mean, yes it can.

Do you know who Marvel's first superhero was? It was the Human Torch. That's right, a character who is possibly the least interesting member of the Fantastic Four, who today play third fiddle to both the Avengers and the X-Men.

Fandoms change, hobbies change. I don't think anyone can seriously say that Elminster is still the "main character" of Forgotten Realms when clearly the setting is chugging on pretty strongly without him.

I mean, if he really was the main character, he wouldn't just get a card; he'd be on the box art instead of Drizzt. But he's not, so he's not!

Different human torch... And it's amazing to think the FF one held down the lead in Strange Tales for so long.
