In my world is a normal DnD milieu.
Ah, so that can do a lot of "explaining" things. Where does the water come from? The ocean bellow. It also makes for a trading partner.

So... what valuable commodity does the sky kingdoms have? Meteoric iron? They are closer to the heavens so they can catch shooting stars :D

We-ell, let's say there's a whole ecology about the giant floating cloud mushrooms - they are fed upon by a giant aerial beetle - the larvae feed on the mycelium and make tunnels - they can be harvested and eaten. The beetles fly around - maybe they have some sort of secretion that does something rare and valuable (sandworms and spice come to mind but hey)

exactly - evil invasion by Pazuzu.....Yan-C-Bin...
could be interesting but we would need other horrors, ideal less demonic for the change of pace.
That's a thought: are there permanent "tunnels" in some of the larger cloud islands, such that there could be an entire "dungeon level" or two up there?

I say the place has magic, just crazy amounts of magic and psionics.
needs some really interesting materials as we have no stone up there logically.

If the cloud-dwellers can steer around at will, not just blow on the wind, they can move rain to where it is wanted - or withhold rain from an area until it becomes a sun-baked Dust Bowl. A powerful threat, usually held in the background, for diplomatic / commercial negotiations.

Some spells - Fog Cloud for the classic example - are permitted only to the upper class of the airborne society. Because they want the symbolism of "I control the sky" ... and you do not.
