D&D General evil plan ideias - why would the villain require 100 souls?

i need to get rid of 100 mercenaries and i out of brain juice
let's say the villain in question is a evil wizard or something like that

Lanterns. He just needs to illuminate his villainous lair.
Bonus points if the lanterns are hauntingly beautiful, and the players pass them several times across the campaign.
i was planning to be more dark and serious but your idea is too funny to miss, i might keep it lol

  • To guard a powerful prisoner in the underworld or on a demiplane.
  • To fuel a summoning ritual, exchanging souls for audience with archfiend.

Have you read Waterdeep: Dragon Heist? One of the four villains you can choose from are a pair of nobles that sold their childrens' souls to Asmodeus and want to break the pact, but that requires them to sacrifice a bunch of money and 100 other souls to Asmodeus in exchange. You could do something like that.
