D&D 5E Playing through a Sample Stat Draft (COMPLETED!)

Charlaquin

Goblin Queen (She/Her/Hers)
Strength 10? I’ll take it!

That gives me
STR 10, DEX 16, CON 12, INT 12, WIS 12, CHA 11
I’ll spend the floating +2/+1 to bring that 16 up to an 18 and that 11 up to a 12, and then take variant human to start off with Lucky and I think I’ve got a very strong backup character that can slot into any combat class save Barbarian and maybe Paladin.

Wisdom 10.

STR 14
DEX 14 (12+2)
CON 10
INT 14 (13+1)
WIS 10
CHA 12

(Gray) Elven Eldritch Knight! (I think, not quite sure what the translation is to 5e for a fighter/magic-user) Hopefully his magic and agility will lessen the need for significant amounts of hit points.

FitzTheRuke

Legend
Okay, that gives me Str 15, Dex 10, Con 12, Int 10, Wis 14, Cha 8.

It's good enough for my Ranger. Not as Dexy as I would prefer for a Halfling, seems more like a Dwarf. I think I will make this a hand-axe throwing Dwarf Ranger. Even with floating ASIs I'll put it +1 Str and +2 Con and wind up with

Str 16, Dex 10, Con 14, Int 10, Wis 14, Cha 8.

I didn't do a great job with my picks but that is a perfectly playable character.

Awesome! But don't worry too much about where you put those ASIs until you've chosen your final set!

For the next draft, we're going in the following order (followed by total points and total modifiers for their first draft picks):

PlayerStat TotalsTotal Modifiers
@Swarmkeeper67+1
@FitzTheRuke69+4
@prabe70+3
@Baron Opal II71+5
@Charlaquin73+6
@TwoSix74+5

So in the next draft, players choose based on lowest total score from the first go-round and ties are broken by who has the lower total modifier.

As you can see from the results above, there is something of a discrepancy between the lowest and highest score and not sure if ASIs will intensify or mitigate that. Personally, I find this difference in stats acceptable and allows for avoiding the cookie-cutter characters of point buy or standard array without the WILD differences of straight up rolling - but I am curious about your opinions.

Anyway, I can post the next set of stats later today or we can wait until tomorrow if folks prefer, let me know.

I notice that the three highest totals are right around what you could get with point buy, and the three lowest are all less than point buy, which puts the average (for this specific draft at least) below that of point buy. I would have preferred for the whole set to be a few points higher to get those averages closer in line.

Yeah, that is one of the potential bugs I am trying to work out (though I tend to prefer lower stats that are built on through play - but also tend to prefer longer old-school campaigns). However, I do think that if Swarmy had made one or two choices differently, his total would have been 69 or 70 without changing others people's totals too much.

For sure. It may also just be the way this particular draft worked out. I imagine in different drafts the averages will vary slightly. Hard to judge with a sample size of 1 though.

I'd like to see the array today. We don't have to start today, but I would like to see what you generate next.

Swarmkeeper also chose two stats below 10, otherwise he would have +3. After placing his ASIs he would have +3, even if her back-filled the 8 and 9 with a +2/+1. Interesting...
