The second character was created last night: A navy 'flyer' who managed to go up two advancement ranks but ran afoul of a teacher at the academy, used his position to gain an illegal benefit and was kicked out of the navy after causing an accident that resulted in several deaths. He leaves with a GIG small ship and a G/Racer.

Nice, Navy flight is the most dangerous career path if I recall correctly.

In MgT2 it's DEX 7+, so I would definitely recommend going in with a high enough dexterity to get a modifier. 7+ is the highest roll for any job/specialty, but there's a fair few that have it. (The softest are 4+.)

One of the thing most incarnations of Traveler did was have virtually no learn-by-doing experience. Even if they wanted it to be slow (which could have been managed by simply having slow accumulation until you made enough to actually make a bonus) that never seemed particularly sensible. I don't know about everyone else here, but even after my formal education was done, I learned quite a bit about my field(s) over time, even if the numbers in Trav are such they should have changed slowly to represent that. It didn't require taking time off to get more training.
That's not correct. Only CT lacks a learn by doing...
MT has a learn by doing.
TTNE has an experience point mechanic.
T4 allows a single roll against a skill used that session. Didn't use any? No chance to gain for you.
MGT1 has a weeks of use mechanic. MGT2 probably does; I'm not checking it.

Mongoose does have a certain amount of hours and then a roll to see if you advance.

I've gone to milestone just for convenience. Whenever the PCs complete and adventure I let them raise up a skill a tick with the exception of Jack of all Trades. Nothing above 4 either. Getting to 5 and/or 6 is a quest level event. This is all my houserule stuff.

If you want XPs in MT2 you need to look at the Companion Book. The core only includes advancement by studying, outside of adventuring, for several weeks. This can be done during space travel between destinations.

I stand corrected. I didn't remember the one from MT, mostly ignored TTNE and didn't see any beyond that; I'd also apparently managed to miss it in MG1 (which I read not long ago but may have done the trick of filling in things I missed from remembering CT). I didn't remember seeing one in the base Cepheus Engine, so I may have overextended that it had been an ongoing trait.
