Dragonlance DRAGONLANCE LIVES! Unearthed Arcana Explores Heroes of Krynn!

The latest Unearthed Arcana has arrived and the 6-page document contains rules for kender, lunar magic, Knights of Solamnia, and Mages of High Sorcery.

In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

Sure, but in a magical world you can't presume that evolution functions the way it does in our world.

There's a lot of misunderstanding of how evolution works. But really, we don't need evolution here.

Let us put it another way - having lost the trait of having fear, in a dangerous world, one would expect kender to die at higher rates, and perhaps become exceedingly rare, or even extinct.

OK I stand corrected. But that’s strait up development, not from initial “huh we should consider this”. Especially since some of this, if I’m right, didn’t start until after it was clear Curse if Strahd was a big hit.

I'm quite certain it wasn't until Ravnica's success that WotC decided to pivot and start releasing more setting books. There was a "Spoilers and Swag" (I miss those, they were good) where Nathan Stewart said Ravnica's success was really strong and they were planning on making more settings because of it.

So I can't see Ravenloft being considered until at least then, and more likely it was considered after the success of Eberron. I know the SCAG was released earlier, but I believe it's initial sales were lackluster as we haven't seen many books like it since.

Yup. And in the end at our tables, where these rules, lore, and such are put into play, they aren’t running your game, we are!

Neither is WotC, by the way. Their word on a given setting is absolutely no better than the creator's.

I wonder if Goodman will ever be able to do another OAR. I believe Mike Mearls was the connective tissue between Goodman and WotC... and well, I don't want to say anything more about Mearls.

Possibly because SCAG wasn't a good book? Never factor out incompetence.
