Dragonlance DRAGONLANCE LIVES! Unearthed Arcana Explores Heroes of Krynn!

The latest Unearthed Arcana has arrived and the 6-page document contains rules for kender, lunar magic, Knights of Solamnia, and Mages of High Sorcery.

In today’s Unearthed Arcana, we explore character options from the Dragonlance setting. This playtest document presents the kender race, the Lunar Magic sorcerer subclass, the Knight of Solamnia and Mage of High Sorcery backgrounds, and a collection of new feats, all for use in Dungeons & Dragons.

Kender have a (surprisingly magical) ability to pull things out of a bag, and a supernatural taunt feature. This magical ability appears to replace the older 'kleptomania' description -- "Unknown to most mortals, a magical phenomenon surrounds a kender. Spurred by their curiosity and love for trinkets, curios, and keepsakes, a kender’s pouches or pockets will be magically filled with these objects. No one knows where these objects come from, not even the kender. This has led many kender to be mislabeled as thieves when they fish these items out of their pockets."

Lunar Magic is a sorcerer subclass which draws power from the moon(s); there are notes for using it in Eberron.

Also included are feats such as Adepts of the Black, White, and Red Robes, and Knights of the Sword, Rose, and Crown.

Since the last pages of this thread is filled with heresy and propaganda, I might have to clear something up: Timothy Dalton's Bond is the emperor and savior of Bonddom. He took doubleohsevenness to unseen heights and shall forever be known as ruler and master over past, present and future Bonds - they will pale and tremble in His Daltonic shadow for eternity.

So is Sean Connery’s Bond, who was active in the 60’s, the same person as Craig’s Bond, active 50 years later?

Option: the James Bond films are not intended or expected to be considered a cohesive canon. They are a collection of legends rather than a continuous plot arc.

A storyteller can tell you a tale of Robin Hood one night. The next night, they may tell you another tale, that contradicts the first. You don't ask, "DId you just reboot Robin Hood?" These are just stories, using common figures and tropes. They may or may not be connected. Perhaps there is a third story that rationalizes the difference, maybe there isn't. Maybe one will be created in the future, or not. That's okay - the desire for canon to make sense is a relatively recent development in fiction, and we shouldn't worry so much about it unless the creators signal to us that canonicity is important.

The idea of "canon" can be useful, but faithfulness to canon should never get in the way of telling a good story, IMO. Of course, what makes a story "good" is highly subjective.

As a fan of Dragonlance fiction from early on, I have to say that the original two trilogies of books (Chronicles and Legends) have not aged well for a variety of reasons. The fiction (including later Weis and Hickman novels) that followed those series were all over the map in terms of quality, but probably never better than "slightly above average" (and often quite considerably worse than that). None of the gaming materials were all that great -- certainly, none of the DL adventure modules are remembered as fondly as other adventures from that era.

Still, I have a lot of fondness and nostalgia for DL and I feel like there's a niche for a war torn world with clearly [color] coded good, evil and neutrality where your party can get swept along in conflict with a whole LOT of dragons. I'd love to see a new War of the Lance adventure path, reimagined to use modern design principles and be less "on-rails." This should also include character options that fit the modern game like the ones here, which aren't perfect but seem like a good start. Some sacred cows from the fiction will necessarily have to die to make this happen. If that means Kender are magical and all of the arcane classes can be "Mages" of High Sorcery, then that's fine.

It's not like Krynn hasn't already been soft-rebooted more than once (in very disruptive ways) to move it from one game system to another. Nothing that WotC could do to move DL into 5E could possibly compare with the Age of Mortals/SAGA fiasco.

The core of Dragonlance is war, dragons, and mortals being used as pawns by the gods in a huge battle to tip the balance of the world in favor of good or evil. Everything else is just set-dressing. Just give me a good, fun story that I and the rest of my gaming group can enjoy.

And he is Rassilon!

I agree with this. But I would argue that the typical RPG setting experience is a lot closer to this sort of “loose canon” approach than anything resembling a strict canon.

So, to return to the original point, maybe the kender are the result of the Greygem. Maybe they are fey instead . Maybe James Bond is fighting Russisn spies during the Cold War. Maybe he’s fighting post 9-11 terrorists instead. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter.

Funny enough I also really enjoy Timothy Dalton's Bond ;)
