Different folks want different things. I find that treating a fandom as a hive mind is never a good idea.
Sure, but when you have a massive outcry about preview things where a significant chunk of your active, engaged userbase effectively review-bombs your game because it does <X>, and then you respond to that criticism and avoid <X> only to have essentially the same community then turn around and howl bloody murder because you avoided <X>....

yes very much so... and back to why I started this thread.

If you asked me in 2e what game system matched what I wanted the closest D&D2e would be it. IF early in 3e you did I would say 3e (by 2005 I was dissillusioned and would have said there wasn't one) but when 4e came out it was exactly what I wanted 15 years earlier...

today 5e is the closest a NON4e game has come to being what I want... but what I REALLY want is a better update to 4e.

I wonder how many people play today 5e that would really fit basic, or 1e/2e better? How many people play 1 playstyle even when the game system ISN"T helping

Look at comics!

Marvel's internal fan-rot is disguised by the fact that Marvel Studios has been shackled and brain-boxed by Disney, but in the comics... yeesh.
yeah... going by fans that grew up loving DC like Jeff Johns, but who wrote out some of MY FAVORITE characters... walley and Kyle get shoved to the back so Barry and Hal can come back. Fate gets stabbed in the back by his own knife (that can't hurt him and he has 100% mental control of) so Dr Fate can return (and unlike the 2 before can't even have new next to old)

n this case it is caster supremacy.

number 1 complaint in 3e is inbalance.
4e balances
a number of complaints in 4e is different forms of too balanced...

As to comics, I don't find them any better or worse today than I ever did. Some decisions I like. Some decisions I hate. This book or that book has risen or dipped in quality. This character has changed, dramatically, FOREVER or been replaced by a Newer, Better, Cooler version, but even if I like those changes, the status quo will reassert itself.

And if I hate them? Give it time.

Back when I collected comics full-time, I stopped collecting DC seriously after Superman became the Man of Plasma (who remembers THAT?) and I just switched to collecting trades of things I liked.

I stopped collecting Marvel after the 15th time they swapped out the creative team of a comic I was reading, and the new team instantly dropped all the plots and subplots and interesting supporting characters to give the book a new, exciting direction!

So now I only collect trades there as well. This means that I can't vote with my wallet, sadly, since the comic companies pretty much decide what's popular based on initial run sales.

But at least I'm not disappointed when the version of the book I liked evaporates inside of an issue.

this tells me you are WAY smarter than I... that is cheaper gives you more forewarning easier to keep and takes up less space... I don't know why I am not just trade hunting.

You like a complete collection? You have more disposable income?

I wish I could afford to buy all the actual comics, even the bad ones, because I don't want to live to see the day that kids don't even know what comic books are, or where the superheroes came from...

Who among you lovely folks remembers Golden Wyvern Adept?

See, following from Bo9S (the same product where D&D players first learned that outright lies and comparison to D&D's unrequited crushes like anime and vidja games could sway people against good products), WotC previewed the new edition with a feat for wand casters that had flavor referencing an organization of wand-based casters; the Golden Wyvern School.

The wonderful folks who are now champions of D&D flavor obviously loved this and... no wait, they ripped it to shreds. They filled several 50+ pages threads on how this was the worst thing to ever happen to D&D and how WotC should NEVER put flavor text into rules. They demanded WotC learn this lesson and never do this again.

Then WotC published clean rules with flavor text in the italics or in the headers for Races and Classes.

At which point, those guys collectively shouted 'GOTCHA!' and pounced on them, tearing them to shreds for not having feats just chock full of flavor text.
How can we know it was the same people? Maybe the 2nd group was quiet until the change.
