Eurovision 2022

Well, now the first semi-final for Eurovision is on. I felt the entries this year was not that good. Here you can see all entries: Participants of Turin 2022

My favourite this year is France.

Semi-final #2 is on Thursday the 12th, and the final on Saturday the 14th.

This year 40 songs compete. Russia was for obvious reasons banned. Ukraine switched out their entry, as it was discovered that the artist had been performing in Crimea (and lied about it if I understood it correctly) in 2015. I think their original entry was better than the one they sent now.

For those that don't know about Eurovision, it is an annual music competition here in Europe*. Each song must be special written for the competition, and should not be longer than 3 minutes. The winner of the previous year gets to host it this year. France, Italy, Spain, Germany and UK are guaranteed places in the final due to paying so much, and the country that hosts it is also always gauranteed a place in the final. Votesd are doen by both juries and the audience. You can not vote for your own country.

*Some countries not in Europe, and not all countries in Europe can enter. it is complicated, but has to do with whether or not they are members of the European TV collaboration. And this is huge in for example Australia, and they have been allowed to enter since the 60th jubilee.

Well, I can understand why Ukraine won, but I think it was a really bad song. I liked the folk music part of it, but hated the rap-part...

That was a perfect result for us. Ukraine wins in a massive show of support, and the UK (finally!) comes in second.

For most North Americans I think their only exposure to the Eurovision Song Context might bt the Will Farrell movie "Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga." Maybe some Monty Python or Benny Hill skits. I know that it gets essentially zero play in Canada, which is a shame.

That was a perfect result for us. Ukraine wins in a massive show of support, and the UK (finally!) comes in second.

I think Eurovision "competition" aspect should be taken with a grain of salt Music is the core aspect but not the only reason for the final results, the show and the feeling and emotions brought up by each artist are even more important. I was glad it ended like it did, even if my favourite song (Georgia) didn't even make it to the finals and my favourite of the final (Lithuania) ended near the bottom. The UK song was really cool, but I also really liked last year's UK song that scored zero points! All it all, it should be just a big party and a good occasion to hear music from other places that we probably wouldn't normally listen to.

I've watched bits and pieces on YouTube. Eurovision is never good as such Every now and then you get something kinda bad it's good.

Ukraine winning was obvious the song was ok and by Eurovision standards that makes it good right?

It certainly is a spectacle. But that is the point. And watching it with friends and families, eating and drinking well and commenting on the various contestants, and the hosts, and generally having fun... It is kitch and campy as heck. But it is one of the most watched events in the world.

I think though that this year, the songs wasn't that good. Sometimes the paus-entertainments are better than the songs that do compete.

I didn't watch it this year and don't know what any of the other songs were like, but I thought the UK entry was rather bland and was astonished to hear we'd come second.
