D&D 5E Are Per Rest Resources a Hindrance?

What if the community doesn't have an issue? Is it possible this is just a problem for hardcore gamers?
If it wasn't an issue, WOTC wouldn't be switching the resource paradigm for subclasses and changing class features 5 years in.

I think it is a problem. However it's so complex and nuanced that only hardcore know how to describe the problem.

It's the "Casual fan knows their sports team is bad but can't accurately explain why" syndrome.

Hmmm, I suppose. I do think you are right in that the 5E gamers I ran with for a campaign didn't really know how to articulate rests and resource mechanics. Though, out of our entire campaign it was only really an issue one or two times. Anecdotal I know, which is why I asked.

I will say HD are an abomination and dealing with spending them on short rests and regaining half on long rest has unironically confused my players more than anything else.

Our group honestly forgot the dumb 'half on a long rest' rule until I noticed it in D&D Beyond and we spent far too long trying to figure out why DDB 'wasn't doing long rest right'.

Turns out it's because 5e isn't doing long rests right.

yeah my group forgets the half a lot... 2 days for a 'full' rest seems odd but we try to keep to it

Thats one of those rules nobody follows.
I always remember as the custom wounds system I borrowed from a friend runs on HD.

The main group I play with has a pair who always screw up the encounters. So we frequently see how 5e gets wacky when you drop down to 2 encounter or 15 encounters a day.
