D&D 5E Vs Vecna battle simulations.

If nobody else chimes in, I'll make a second character. I like the idea of this trial being a bunch of thugs vs Vecna, so I might just make a Fighter.

I figured @Smythe the Bard might play again, if he uses Leon or something else...

Sounds good to me if you are fine having two? But maybe someone new will jump in for another PC... we'll see. You might want to make something up just in case.

This is exactly the reason why I don't use grid.
That is totally redacted... (in my opinion of course... and I don't blame anyone who plays on a grid.)
FWIW when I DM I use A LOT of theatre of mind unless it is a significant fight... then I like the grid because it makes it more visual for everyone and people get a better idea of what is happening.

I am not a fan of some of the rules/methods for grid play, personally, which is why I started the other thread about it--but interest seems to have waned in that. 🤷‍♂️

Do you use minis at all (non-grid) or just ToM or something else?

I prefer TotM myself, but I sell miniatures and terrain, so I end up using them quite a bit. Not in my home game, though.

I have used this to describe why I prefer TotM:

"When I play with miniatures and think back on the game later, I remember as myself, moving the miniatures around on the grid. When I play theatre-of-the-mind, I remember as my character, staring down that ogre and rolling to the side as his club comes crashing down the the dirt where I just was, and I pop to my feet and stab him in his quivering belly."

I sometimes use visual aids, sometimes even a grid. Probably the same as you.
But I would not determine cover this way.
I would not bother drawing a line that if you take the outer edges of a square so I can just barely go around cover.
If I did this to my players they would call me a rules lawyer or cheater, because we would not even know that such a rule for cover exist.
I have played with such a rules lawyer a few years ago and notived hiw I hate that.

So how would you do it?

Calling this "rules lawyering" isn't something I would do, personally. The rule is there and it is just how the system works. Its not perfect of course, so it can certainly be altered from table to table to fit your style/needs.
