If nobody else chimes in, I'll make a second character. I like the idea of this trial being a bunch of thugs vs Vecna, so I might just make a Fighter.
Sounds good to me if you are fine having two? But maybe someone new will jump in for another PC... we'll see. You might want to make something up just in case.If nobody else chimes in, I'll make a second character. I like the idea of this trial being a bunch of thugs vs Vecna, so I might just make a Fighter.
Minor point but any reason you went with Splint armor instead of Plate?
This is exactly the reason why I don't use grid. This is also incorrect:

I doubt it matters much for the monk, but it means Vecna can see him, as well.
FWIW when I DM I use A LOT of theatre of mind unless it is a significant fight... then I like the grid because it makes it more visual for everyone and people get a better idea of what is happening. This is exactly the reason why I don't use grid.
That is totally redacted... (in my opinion of course... and I don't blame anyone who plays on a grid.)
I prefer TotM myself, but I sell miniatures and terrain, so I end up using them quite a bit. Not in my home game, though.FWIW when I DM I use A LOT of theatre of mind unless it is a significant fight... then I like the grid because it makes it more visual for everyone and people get a better idea of what is happening.
I am not a fan of some of the rules/methods for grid play, personally, which is why I started the other thread about it--but interest seems to have waned in that.
Do you use minis at all (non-grid) or just ToM or something else?

So how would you do it?But I would not determine cover this way.
I would not bother drawing a line that if you take the outer edges of a square so I can just barely go around cover.
Calling this "rules lawyering" isn't something I would do, personally. The rule is there and it is just how the system works. Its not perfect of course, so it can certainly be altered from table to table to fit your style/needs.If I did this to my players they would call me a rules lawyer or cheater, because we would not even know that such a rule for cover exist.
I have played with such a rules lawyer a few years ago and notived hiw I hate that.
