D&D 5E D&D New Edition Design Looks Soon?

WotC’s Ray Winninger has hinted on Twitter that we may be seeing something of the 2024 next edition of D&D soon — “you’ll get a first look at some of the new design work soon.”.

I would assume the biggest reason for buying DndBeyond was to get the numbers on what people are actually playing. There's less need for surveys if you know what people actually use.

It will be interesting to see if they start having UA in DDB again, although the technical limitations and effort may not be worth it.
You could be right. But I wonder what proportion of players/groups actually use DDB at all. I don't. For example, and several of my gamer friends had never even heard of it until I brought it up a few weeks ago.

There's still a value in the surveys, is what I'm getting at.

True: my wild speculation is that the new Starter Set coming out next month might have some different Class features for the Pregens than the 2014 Core standard. Classes are the big Wildcard possibility for radical change, since they are modular rules.
And they recently(ish) got a big ‘ol satisfaction survey, so yeah, I expect that’s where the bulk of the changes will be. Along with bringing the PHB races and MM monsters up to the standard we see in MMotM, and backgrounds and feats being brought in line with Strixhaven.

I'd guess the biggest reason was to build a full VTT on it.... But yes, the data is important. I'd guess wotc already had it though.

I don’t expect they will, because the fast turnaround on UAs of late makes me think they are really only using it to gauge interest based on first impressions anymore, rather than to gather feedback based on actual gameplay experience.

I wonder if there is a net benefit to WotC owning their own VTT. Unless they are going to make it harder or even impossible for other outlets to serve D&D players on their platforms, I don't see how it could be worth the investment.
Our group plays many games... this will just leave D&D out of our circulation if it isn't supported on other VTTs (Foundry). I know that is a small percentage of the players out there however, sadly people don't try enough new games.

That's my point: if they make it so I can't play D&D on Fantasy grounds (where I have probably spent $500 on D&D stuff alone) I am not going to be playing D&D. But if they make it so I can, I won't be using their VTT service. So It's hard to see the benefit.

I have about 20 players among all my gaming groups, only one of them has an active DDB subscription.
