WotC’s Ray Winninger has hinted on Twitter that we may be seeing something of the 2024 next edition of D&D soon — “you’ll get a first look at some of the new design work soon.”.
most of that is spell design which could be done for a dedicated class, check out my idea for the imbued. The magus is still not what I want. The magus still casts the same spells as a wizard. I want a class whose magical abilities are focused around melee combat. I want to reach out with telekinesis (or a summoned tentacle or whatever), grab a foe, and pull them onto my sword. I want to make a mighty leap into a horde of enemies and have my landing be the center of an explosion of some kind of energy, both dealing damage and knocking foes over. I want to transform myself into a lightning bolt, blast across the field of battle and damaging all the foes in my way. I want to summon an illusory double that distracts my foe so I can get a good shot in.
There's no class in 5e or Pathfinder that comes even close to doing that sort of thing.
brawler has the wrong connotations as that is far closer to a barbarian without weapons that what the monk is a shadow of.yeah Ninja comes with it's own bagage... I would like brawler, martial artist or something along those lines...

sounds great...I want to make a mighty leap into a horde of enemies and have my landing be the center of an explosion of some kind of energy, both dealing damage and knocking foes over.

yup...I want to summon an illusory double that distracts my foe so I can get a good shot in.
yeah I want an unarmed strike class without the asian or monastary vibe and can't think of onebrawler has the wrong connotations as that is far closer to a barbarian without weapons that what the monk is a shadow of.
So what's the solution? Rename the class? As I said, ninja might be more appropriate and I would assume that there are about as many ninjas as there are druids. I don't think anybody thinks "D&D monk" and thinks "real world religious aesthetic monk".druid does not matter as the culture who made them is so dead they might as well be fossils at this point and are white so we would not be appropriating.
yeah Ninja comes with it's own bagage... I would like brawler, martial artist or something along those lines...
Exactly. I'm not saying it can't be done, I'm saying it hasn't been done.5e has some spells that comes close...
greenflame blade, booming blade, sword burst are great start... zypher strike and hunters mark are desent, the thing is we would need a class specific set of spells...
Those are all cool ideas. Particularly the one about pinning an enemy via their shadow.let me add I want to teleport around a target or targets making multi attacks
I want to be able to commune with the spirit in my sword/ancestors
I want to blast out a force beam from my sword
I want to charge 1 enemy teleport mid way past them to hit the enemy behind them
I want to slam my sword or knife into the shadow of my enemy and pin him in place
I want to shatter boulders and maybe someday mountains with my sword strike
I want to slice a whole in reality and slide to another plane
there is already a ninja in the PHB... if you didn't see it, it's because they are very sneaky.yeah Ninja comes with it's own bagage... I would like brawler, martial artist or something along those lines...
that's the acolyte background... but yes, your point is 100% valid.Monk is properly a Background, at any rate. Cleric Monks, Wizard Monks and Sorcerer Monks, even Bard Monks, make as much sense historically as Martial Arts Monks.
Hermit is probably the background that's more appropriate for a typical "western" monk. Acolyte is more of a priest-type.that's the acolyte background... but yes, your point is 100% valid.
Some Ranger and other spells (beyond those mentioned) allow for some magical weapon attacks. Yes I think it's something that's lacking in 5e. Even though some of those example could just be reflavoured spells using a weapon as a focus. Including the common, "slam your weapon into the ground to create a shockwave".5e has some spells that comes close...
