My first campaign for 5e was my first time running a game in 20 years. It was so unfamiliar. I house rules a lot.

Each subsequent campaign has had fewer and fewer house rules. I think I'm down to just 4 now.

You'd be surprised how many people legitimately think it is the only correct way to play.
I know. And then they complain how the game does not work, not realizing that it is their house rule which heavily unbalances it.

Edit:
funny thing: today I read the official rules of the newest version of monopoly, and noticed that it includes a warning that house rules should not be used, because they will just prolong the game into a slog...
i remember that I never played monopoly by the rules and i remember it not very fondly... i think I should try the official rules and look how it really is.

Well, technically. I made a decision that we were definitely using the optional potion miscibility rules in the first 5e game I ran, when I had never played the game before. I'm still waiting for a player to actually drink two potions so I can roll on that table.

For this one, let's assume you are a DM who either has full say on these kinds of choices or has a group that is willing to at least try whatever houserules/options you suggest for a few sessions. . .

Other than that, simple premise: True or False: "I House Ruled Aspects of 5E or Chose to Use Options from the DMG Before I'd Ever Played or Run 5E" in other words just from reading (or reading about) the rules.
Your question and my answer inspired me to think about why I house ruled and part of why I don't do it as much any more.

And the answer to that question was that I want to keep growing the game, which means fewer house rules so that new players can use all the blogs, podcasts, video and social media about the game as it is currently written.

Now is the time for fewer house rules. -- I blog.

I used a house rule that gave +1d4 on flanking because the DMG wasn’t out yet, and I had guessed (wrongly as it turns out) that is what the optional flanking rule would be.
