D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

if they are listening, and we make enough noise, maybe we can change the world... 1D&D 1 player 1 vote

you have no idea what they are or are not doing with classes... nether do we.

warlord, warblade, swordsage, animesword guy... I don't need it to be called fighter
Yes, I realized later (and posted about it) that you can do it with a new class (I've even made one myself!). So I will retract my statement a bit. It can be done within the parameters of 5e; but based on their statements I don't think it would happen until after the 2024 core release.

Harry Potter says expecti something and the weapon flies from an enemy hand
Dr strange (in movies) makes laser ropes that pulls an item from there hand
Luke or Rey skywalker uses the force and a hand motion to knock the weapon from there hand
The Lone Ranger shoots the weapon out of there hand
Batman or cap throws there weapon (shield or batarrang) and disarms them

In there own stories they all do this. In a team up cross over they should all still be able to do this.
Tarzan stops the earthquake... how? well the writer was on his side... but that is no different then Elminster stopped the earth quake... how? well the writer is ALWAYS on his side.

it's like the power scaling arguments "Can goku beat superman?" "Can Flash beat She Hulk?" the truth is a good writer can get told "I want you to write a 6 issue mini series where Mole man from Marvel teams up with Kite man from DC... and they hold both NYCs in terror while the combined force of the FF, JLA, and Avengers have to put aside some differences and work together to stop them... bonus points if you can get GL corps and Nova corps in there for at least 1 issue working with them" and make that work...
now if we played out superman alone solos Mole man and Kiteman... but that is a boreing story. The job of the writer is to challenge the characters somehow.

PF2e does do a really great job of this because martials can have techniques beyond just attacking and can do some appropriately 'approaching demigod status things' at high level but there's still a lot of options for someone who is just attacking really fast or whatever even at high levels. The archetype system really contributes as well, since you can always take something more magical to supplement your martial abilities. The only thing it won't do for you, is police the other players to play by the tone you want.

Polls have shown that the maximum power-level players (a la EnWorld anyway) are generally comfortable for martials is Captain America/Black Panther levels. I associate that with the Hercules/Xena level as well and I can get totally on board with it for 14+ level PCs.
well we will have alot more voices in the playtest I assume
What I really don't want is martials doing things "magically". Having them move so fast they seem like a blur is one thing--having them vanish or teleport or do anything obviously magical is not their purview IMO.

Now, instead of boosting martials, my appeal has always been to rein in casters, limiting spells to 5th or 6th levels. You can still do insane stuff with magic at those levels.

At any rate, since I seem to be in the minority on such things, I'll just express my POV and move on. Enjoy your games! :)

In Harry Potter the muggles are supporting characters, not the heroes.

It's incoherent to try and say Dumbledore and the swolest guy at your local gym should both be protagonists in the same story.

Now we just all need to agree what that middle ground is.

Good luck.
this is why I think we need to Break Up the Figher... a big complex martial character on par with full casters (warlord/warblade/swordsage/animeswordguy/demigod) but still have a simple champion fighter too... I would also want a full 1/2 castter (eldritchknight/duskblade/bladesinger/magus/gish)

maybe not... but putting the pressure on NOW during the time tehy are listening is important.

In Harry Potter neither Dumbledor nor that “swole” guy from the gym are protagonist.

I also don’t want to play “some swole guy” I want to play an epic warrior of legend

See this is the thing that some people don't seem to grasp. If Wizards gives fighters and rogues some anime/superhero style options... NOBODY IS FORCING YOU TO TAKE THEM. You pick the "grounded " options instead.

If those options don't exist... We're stuck with 3pp, which is far less likely to be allowed at any given table, and will never be as familiar as first-party content.

I also don't particularly like the reliance on "runes" versus just increased power (like in 4e), but I imagine that can be houseruled.
