D&D 5E Being strong and skilled is a magic of its own or, how I learned to stop worrying and love anime fightin' magic

Yes. You just have to start from the assumption of "a skilled warrior has more in his repertoire than the ability to hit things really hard."

Most of the level 29 fighter powers (the highest level attacks in the game) do things like "attack a guy with 3x base weapon dice and inflict the dazed status, or deal half damage and no daze on a miss. Then move without provoking OAs and attack a different enemy, and then do it one more time," or "hit one guy for 4x base weapon dice, then knock him into his allies like a bowling ball, doing damage to them and knocking them back."
See, I'm OK with these. Because you ate still just fundamentally hitting someone, with a bonus attached.

It's when we get into the actual magical things, I consider a Gish/Magus as the first choice.

Well, see, I'm not asking for fighters to do "magic". I'm asking for them to do "awesome".

I should be able to do things like grapple Orcus and swing him like a baseball bat into his own minions, or hit a guy in the head with my shield so hard that he's stunned until he makes a Con save, or yes, challenge my enemies to "come at me, bro" so compellingly that they have to make a Charisma save or move adjacent and attack me on their next turn.

I mean outside of the Orcus one... sure.

It's the "my yell is a stunning cone" or, my blade sends out a shockwave, or "I run up this 50 foot wall." that is firmly anime/mythic, and to me (imo alert) is just outside of Martial.

Not that I'm against a Gish/Magus, just that it's not the Fighter.

"My yell is a stunning code" is just a high level intimidate effect though.
 


Why is this a problem for you?

Perhaps because...

The visual implies some elements of the physicality, and thus implies the severe leverage problem involved in having a 6' tall creature try to swing a 20' tall one around.

The spellcasters have a reason behind being able to tell the laws of physics to shut up and sit down. Hercules has a reason - he's half god himself. Your fighter needs a reason, and, "I fight a lot," doesn't narratively cut it.

So monks are magic then?
Chalk the Orcus thing up as a personal view. Fighters wouldn't do such a thing, a being like the Hulk would. Don't ask me how I feel about Strongman Halflings... ;)

Monks certainly lean into magical/mystical abilities.

"My yell is a stunning code" is just a high level intimidate effect though.
Fair, but it's skirting the line for me.
