It occured to be there is a problem with comparing to legends and myths ... In the legends the Fighter/Hero defeats the Dragon often all by themselves and D&D is a team game.
In other words the game aspect fights against that goal
(the hero teams in early era are typically mythical less legendary and get conflated with pantheons of gods or ruling classes, like the Tuatha de Danaan and Aesir or Vanir )
Even groups like the round table or the argonauts are a hundred individuals or so, superheroes are actually a better model.
