D&D 5E Inspiration! How's It Working Out For You?

So the Inspiration rules...

No mechanic needs to exist. Folks can play fantasy cops-and-robbers easily enough.
What I mean by that, I suppose, is that I'm not sure what it's supposed to bring to the experience. Are people using inspiration in their games finding it exciting? I know in my experience, even when I've tried to use it actively and even when players remember to use it, it's not ratcheting up the fun, but maybe I'm an outlier.

My players, in a pinch situation, like having it around as one last rabbit to pull out of a hat to help make a thing work. YMMV.
