Isn't part of Faerun's thing the fact that it crisises like the DC universe whenever the writers feel like it?
DC has redone their whole continuity like 3 or 4 times now. Last time got me stop reading DC comics.

Faerun while having crazy stuff like gods being turned mortal etc they’ve never straight “reset” the world like they did for 4th where the majority of popular NPC died. Reading about how this decision hit Greenwood is especially sad.

The difference will be if they do "They were always there!" or "All the Tieflings and Orcs and Warforged and Good Draconians were over on this island and showed up in the middle of the war..." oh that still doesn't work because that period in time is well documented. I suppose they can just go with "They were always there... just no one mentioned them." As we already know they are doing with Sorcerers and Warlocks and Bards etc in the Towers of High Sorcery.
I expect they will do the "They were always there!", though I don't think they'll pull in Orcs (they still have goblins and hobgoblins they can use, and I think that's a nice, unique feature).

Honestly, if all the 5E (core) races had been available back in the day when they originally did Dragonlance, I think they would have incorporated them from the start, and they're likely to give them a place now.

Though personally, I'm going to be ignoring "Good" draconians/Dragonborn for any Dragonlance I run. That just never did sit well with me.

I take it you didn't care for Margaret Weis' "Doom Brigade/Kang's Regiment" books in the 90's then? ;)

WotC have excluded races in other products, I wouldn't be surprised if they do the same here. Like Stormonu, I'll be running a war of the lance game where draconians are the bad guys, so no dragonborn player characters. I've already mentioned that I'll be restricting races and classes for my games, but the draconians being the bad guys during war of the lance is definitely a big one for me.

I can't think of one since 3.5.

Settings with excluded races? The MtG books generally restricted the races, stating the PHB races (or perhaps just most of them) are unknown in the settings unless visiting from other worlds. So you won't find gnomes, dragonborn, or tieflings in either of them (though really, tieflings would fit well with the Rakdos so I wouldn't be surprised if many DMs added them to the setting).

Forgotten Realms has always been a kitchen sink setting, and Eberron has generally been a setting of "if it exists in DnD, it has a place in Eberron", so no surprises that neither of those have race restrictions.

That's what I'll find interesting in how they do it. For me, Dragonlance has always emphasised the personal and emotional stuff with the war more in the background. More along the lines of Gone With The Wind than something like Band of Brothers. But the marketing for the December releases really focus on the war side of thing. I was kinda hoping for rules/guidelines/advice on handling Destiny and Tragedy and Romance (with capital letters), and a campaign that deliberately emphasised that kind of story. Of course they're not mutually exclusive, but a purely grim & gritty war story Dragonlance would be a distinct tonal change.
Yeah tbh what I’d want from a DL game now, as opposed to what I wanted when I was 14, might be best served by stealing liberally from Blue Rose.
