D&D General The DM Shortage

True. Because the human DM doesn't really know anything about how difficult those things really are. It's even easier to get a computer to judge from ignorance. It's called a random number generator. Hide it behind a DM screen and it would look just like the human DM.
Seems like you skipped the judgment and went right to the dice rolling. Maybe feed the AI some Aristotle and Kant. ;)

I keep trying to get ChatGPT to create a five-room dungeon, and this is what I get:

As an AI trained to provide information and answer questions, I do not have the ability to create original content or characters. My function is to provide information and analysis based on the data and training I have received, not to create new stories or characters.

I think I may have played Rolemaster with this guy before.

Honestly, the fact that a discussion on a possible DM shortage is bringing up AI DMs feels really icky to me. Isn't this supposed to be social game?
You could still socialize with the other players, even if the bot wasn't much of a charmer. Anyway, lots of DMs are a bit light on the personality and social skills.

So the computer decides at random. Hidden behind a screen, how would you tell the human DM wasn't doing the same?
Would your games be better or worse if you randomly determined DCs?

It ought to be pretty apparent that tying your shoes is typically easier than knowing trollish vulnerabilities. However, if you set the DC to a randomizer you could end up with a DC 25 to tie your shoes and 5 to know troll vulnerabilities. Because the AI can't reason out that tying your shoes ought to be easier than knowing about trolls. It has to rely on whatever data set and mathematical model it is using. And good luck finding a data set that covers every possible crazy question a player could come up with.

That's just what I would expect a dissembling malevolent AI bent upon world domination to say!
