D&D 5E So this is how D&D 5e dies, a beautiful start only to die in disgrace because of mismanagement. RIP 5e

It's been several years since I played just one game of Cards Against Humanity. That game is evil, but in a good way. ;) If such a thing were possible that is. :p
Yep. One of the tamer combinations that I remember came from a family get together. Someone flipped up the black card that said, "What would grandma find disturbing, yet oddly charming?" The card I played was, "Grandpa's ashes." One of the women there who was also a grandmother laughed and said, "Considering that I have grandpa's ashes up on my mantle, I have to agree!" Everyone got a great laugh.

It's an amazing game for people who aren't easily offended, and a game to stay away from if you are.

Cynic Battle-Stance: The real thing worth prognosticating is not whether D&D 5e or One D&D dies by the end of the year, but, rather, the extent to which people still care about the OGL controversy by the end of the year. The reality of consumer cognitive dissonance means that many people will look for excuses to overlook WotC's OGL controversy for the sake of consuming the D&D games and products they love.

What does it mean for D&D to die? I mean I don’t know what that means. Is it dead if it isn’t published anymore? That’s surely not the case. And will not be the case.
When people say a game is dead, what they mean is that it is no longer published. You might argue that this isn't exactly an accurate term, and you'd be right. It's an idiomatic expression and welcome to the English language.
It must be why they hired software executives. D&D-as-a-service.
I think they've also borrowed a page from Games Workshop. GW likes to talk about "the hobby," but what they're referring to isn't miniatures painting or table top war games, but specifically GW products. WotC wants to do the same thing with D&D. And since D&D is synonymous with RPGs in the minds of many people, I think WotC has a leg up here.

Obviously huh? From this it sounds like the 3E OA was worse than the 1E. I'll have to look it up some time, wow.
One step forwards, two steps back. IIRC, the Asians Represent folks were more annoyed by the 3E iteration, because they felt that WotC in the Seattle of the Aughts should have been more aware than TSR in rural Wisconsin in the 80's.
What does that mean in this context, like th
I mean rules I don't cotton to, or art that doesn’t inspire. Both of which were a problem in 4E (I bought the PHB with the intention of getting all 3 Core at least, but that was the only book I bought).
But you pointed out the real solution to all this a while back - just let people sign a licence to get on Beyond! It can be as restrispeak to me. Bot octive as you like! Issue a statement saying "Unless you do this, we disavow you" and give those people who a sign a nice official-looking logo. Take 30% of the sales! Everyone's a winner!

I think this is part of why I'm SO annoyed about this.
For real, they could have accomplished their business ambitions while still maintaining their image. Total own goal.

I just checked out of curiosity and the PHB is still #113 out of all books on Amazon. That's estimated to be around 9,000 copies per month being sold, which is lower than what we saw in December but that makes sense because of the drop off after Christmas.

Tell me again how this is the death knell?

Tell me how those numbers are reflective of changes that have all happened in only the past WEEK.

I like 5e and will play 5e for the foreseeable future. I played AD&D 1e until 99 or 2000.

Been here before. I am not into gatekeeping but a part of me shudders at what will happen as the game moves to get even broader appeal—-in terms of culture and playstyle. Surely the gaming culture I love was already dying. We still play dungeons, lots of combat and traps…

Add in micro transactions and I am surely cut out of the worlds that happens in.

I am just an ally of convenience, really. Their recent garbage solidifies things. I just find monetizing and pretending to save the comminuty from Evil at the same time super gross…how condescending. Good lord, you have a product you want to be the sole beneficiary of. Own it.

But games will go on.
