I dont play DnD inorder to reflect reality so thats moot
The violence and murder issues are also distinctly 3rd world America issues. Im mostly happy with our local cops

City Watch / Investigator 20-2 = 18 [/B]- why the weird love for playing cops?
You say all this as if this will make once difference to me.
No, I say all this because you asked why people might want their characters to be members of a city watch. You don't get it, probably never will, and that's fine.

I learned a long time ago that changing anyone's mind on the Internet is an exercise in futility.

Your reply appears to answer a different question besides the bold, but it doesn't really matter.

Yep, it does. I edited my post to include the proper quote from the Survivor thread (I forgot that this is the Commentary thread).
No, it doesn't address the question of why at all. You mostly talk about how you handle things in your game, but not why people would choose to play cops. Plus, I don't care if you or your players play bad cops or good cops; what I dislike is playing cops at all regardless of how anyone chooses to whitewash them.

Wow. Just wow. Do you also hold their hands when things don't go their way, and mutter platitudes to take the sting out of the occasional "bad luck" they suffer?
As often as I can! They're getting pretty tired of hearing me say "Aw, but you tried your hardest! Here's a mercy point...um, I mean inspiration point....for your efforts!"

Seriously though, my players are pretty good at "failing forward" in the narrative, so even bad luck can be fun. As for the "how do you want to do this" bit, I'm really just trying to make my life easier. As a DM I have enough to worry about, without having to track things like nonlethal damage or death saves on NPCs. I figure if the party won the battle, they control the battlefield...and that includes the state of their opponent(s).

Well, at my table? City Watch ≠ Cops. (I try to go with more of a "Neighborhood Watch" vibe.)

As for everyone else's table? Not my place to say.

As for your dislike of cops in general? Beyond the bounds of polite discussion, and trending in the direction of politics.

I know they're variations of each other, but I think Guild Merchant is different enough from Guild Artisan that it should have been a distinct entry.

I'm bummed to hear that 5.1 is doing away with the current version of backgrounds.
I know right? It was one of the better elements of 5E design. (Reminded me a lot of "kits," from back in the day.) OneD&D is still being developed, so hopefully they reconsider the direction.
